Aha Shake Heartbreak may have blown open the doors of fame for Kings of Leon, but their third full-length album (named for a United Pentecostal Church ministers' conference) could well usher the Nashville foursome directly to rock and roll's zenith. There's hardly a change in plans for the three Followill brothers and their cousin, and that means producer Ethan Johns, a smorgasbord of musical influences, and a cacophonous ensemble of guitar, bass, and drums. A trio of relentless rockers--"My Party," "Camaro," and the sarcastic "Charmer"--are sure to pacify those familiar with the Kings' blueprint, yet there is ripening in the band's approach heard, in several of the record's 13 songs. Reverb guitar and vocals and a "woo woo" chorus add a sinister aspect to "Trunk," and "Knocked Up" features a laissez-faire Caleb Followill crooning "She don't care what her mama said/She's gonna have my baby." The seven-minute revelation of fatherhood that opens the album leads into the U2-influenced "McFearless," a reggae-splashed "Ragoo," and the rambling English blues of "Black Thumbnail." It's a rogue element that has always left every record fresh, and this time it has Kings of Leon teetering on the edge of rock renown. --Scott Holter

Album Description
Third album from the rockin' American quartet whose previous albums (2003's Youth And Young Manhood and Aha Shake Heartbreak from '05) have earned them a large worldwide following. 5 out of 5 stars KINGS OF LEON ARE AMAZING!   November 23, 2008
WOW!,the sound and performance is just like "Aha Shake Heartbrake" but the tracks are different. For a true fan,i recommend "Youth And Youngman Hood","Aha Shake Heartbrake","Because Of The Times" and "Only By The Night".

5 out of 5 stars Year's Best   November 7, 2008
This is the best album in the last year, maybe last two. Followill's voice is the most uniquely haunting sound ... I can't stop playing these tunes. There are half a dozen unforgettable cuts here; "Knocked Up" ranks with the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs' "Maps" as one of the best tracks of the decade. And I'm not some kid: at 44, I come out of a Lou Reed, Petty, Costello, Springsteen mold. This is good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Short and sweet   September 22, 2008
All I can say is, wow. This is a phenomenal record and you're really missing out if you skip it. The last 3 songs alone are worth it even if "knocked up" doesn't put you in a trance; it's dang near hypnotic for me. Great stuff!!

4 out of 5 stars The exploding bulb is an appropriate image.   June 6, 2008
Kings of Leon is a great, young, energetic band. They caught my attention with the first single On Call, which I find quite irresistible. The music on Because Of The Times has traces of artists such as Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Doors, but most importantly, Kings Of Leon have created a rather unique sound of their own.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and Different   May 31, 2008
The album plays with the your ear drums from the start. There are too many good things to say, so I will keep this very very short. I have been passionate about music my entire life. I even worked in the business for 4 years. I have had very few occurences where I was so swept away by the originality of an album. The Kings of Leon are not using wild new instruments, like homemade 3-string basses, but they are breaking rules. They are quickly moving into a class all by themselves, and their popularity (or lack thereof) in the United States shows how original they are.
