Very Impressive Rock Album December 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Before I dug into this album by Pillar, their 5th full-length release, I was only familiar with a few of their songs Frontline, Fireproof, and the U2 cover Sunday Bloody Sunday. Something changed when I heard the title song For The Love Of The Game. The instrumentation was so tight and the emotive vocal style of Rob Beckley drew me in like my other favorite Christian rock albums of the decade by Disciple, Red and Skillet. If you like those artists, then you MUST get this album.
From the opening notes of For The Love Of The Game, I was hooked. I found myself bobbing my head, air drumming, and pretending I was a Guitar Hero with every song, especially Turn It Up with the 34 Christian song titles in the lyrics, State Of Emergency and Get Back. If you grew up in the 1980's like I did, you'll be reminded of hair metal bands Def Leppard, Poison and Motley Crue, which is fun. As if those great rock songs weren't enough, the two standout songs to me are the ballad Smiling Down and the worshipful closer Forever Starts Now. I got chills listening to both songs. If you like rock music with a great message, then you must get this very impressive rock album. I rank it 90% out of 100%, 4 1/2 stars.
Too Short December 3, 2008 Pillar's latest album For The Love Of The Game is really a return to the days of Fireproof in that its hard and heavy but short. Each song is catchy and well written but the entire album goes by fast that your wondering what happened to Pillar. Each song is 3 minutes along and the last song is 4 minutes long, there are 10 songs which they could of added more like an extra 2 songs. The drumming is great and it sounds better than The Reckoning. My favorite tracks would be Throwdown which has rapping similar to Fireproof and has yelling it it. Worth getting for Pillar fans who couldn't get enough of The Reckoning.
Pillar November 17, 2008 Pillar for the love of the game. Is a great cd to have nice guitar sounds to it as well as the drums and vocals are good it is one of there very best album to date just if they only put maybye 2 more songs on it would be better. But it is way better than last album.
An Album That Tries to Be Fun... And Ends Up Shallow November 16, 2008 Boy, I feel kind of sorry for poor Pillar. Way back when, "Where do We Go From Here" was a pretty good album, "The Reckoning" had a very good radio hit on it... No such luck with "For the Love of the Game." In returning to the "classic" Pillar sound, the midwestern boys have grown monotonous, shallow and un-creative. I think it's great that these guys are out preaching and ministering to the masses, (I love all brothers in Christ) but as a musician, I cannot recommend this album to anyone but the most casual rock listeners.
Great Album July 22, 2008 Pillar keeps getting better. This album follows their anthem like songs found in the album Fireproof that skyrocketed them to the top of the charts. This is a great album that goes back to there roots and really shows who Pillar is!!!
