This bawdy burlesque demonstrates the difference between naked and "naked." The musicians of Barenaked Ladies perform fully clothed. The "happy Hollywood hyphenates" of Naked Boys Singing! perform fully un-clothed. In the filmed version of Robert Schrock's enduring revue, a 10-man troupe picks up where The Full Monty left off. First, they shed their clothes as they enter LA's Hayworth Theater. Once on stage, they start the party with the The Chorus Line-like come-on, "Tonight you finally get what you paid for!" Throughout the set, the diverse array of physically fit men wax poetic on topics ranging from nude housekeeping (Kevin Stea's "Naked Maid") to cultural traditions (Joe Souza's "The Bliss of Bris"). A hint of wistfulness aside, like original cast member Vincent Zamora's "Window to Window," the vibe is lighthearted and upbeat. Most of the 16 ditties follow the show-tune template, with the exception of Jaymes Hodges's country-flavored "Nothin' but the Radio On" and Anthony Manough's disco-oriented "Muscle Addiction." (13 writers receive credit, including Bruce Vilanch). Some performances are solo; others include two or more participants, like locker room lament "Fight the Urge" and opening salvo "Gratuitous Nudity." Gay-friendly and body-positive, Naked Boys Singing! embodies truth in advertising. The show was recorded in front of a live audience and the entire repertoire--except Jason Currie's soft-shoe "Robert Mitchum"--features full-frontal nudity. Taking into account the options of "pause" and "zoom," a behind-the-scenes documentary offers an additional advantage over the in-the-flesh viewing experience. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

2 out of 5 stars Gimmick is "shot" after 10 minutes. A real bore.   December 5, 2008

The guys come onstage and are naked but holding their hands over their genitals. They start to sing and throw their hands up and show it all. Fine. After 10 minutes there seems little point in watching the same guys walk around singing naked. They put on clothes sometimes which allows you to pay attention to the music and lyrics instead of looking at the same things flapping up and down. It is at that time you realize the music is pretty bad and the lyrics try to be funny and aren't, try to be serious and aren't, try to be enlightening and aren't. Really, there is little purpose for this show unless you enjoy watching naked guys change places on stage over and over for well past an hour. These guys can sing very well to a tinny "orchestra" but for what? I guess this is entertainment to some. More power to anyone who can find this worth watching. I thought it was going to be a real musical with a real story. It is not really either. It is more of a revue. If they are going to get naked it should be used to serve a story, not just to be a gimmick. Two stars to the boys for having the nerve to show it all to strangers for a few bucks.

5 out of 5 stars Clever and clean   November 23, 2008

"Naked Boys Singing" was a genuine surprise. I ordered it for the obvious reasons. However, it proves to be a delightful and extremely clever revue. Most of the singing is good, the dancing is excellent, and the performers are all attractive, although obviously not trying to compete with the Hollywood "pretty boy" image. Don't buy this DVD if you're looking for porno. After the first shock of ten good bodies appearing without clothes, the nudity seems somehow rather innocent and natural--not at all suggestive or smutty. In no way do the performers seem to by trying to "turn on" the audience. Granted some of the words are rather suggestive, but not the performers or their actions. I would recommend this DVD for anyone who had a healthy attitude toward nudity and a good sense of humor (actually a couple of the portions are very moving); strangely,if one has an open mind and carefully listens to the words, it is actually easy to almost forget about the nudity! Highly recommended for anyone who isn't afraid to view healthy nudity and has an open mind about gay emotions.

4 out of 5 stars Just Completely Fantastic   July 12, 2008

This was a fantastic video! It was very entertaining. Had very nice looking guys, good setting. Nicely done. Unfortunately there were no erections and of course no ejaculation. It was very clean soft porn but very much worth watching. The behind the scenes were VERY DISAPPOINTING, there was no nudity and when they did show nudity it was blotted out! So expect nudity only in the main video and that is all. Don't expect anything special after that. I am always disappointed in videos that refuse to show any erections.

5 out of 5 stars Even better than I expected   July 6, 2008

In theatre those who can act, sing and dance are caled "triple threats" and often find work when others can not. These "Naked Boys Singing" are "Quadruple Threats" because although we see little of their acting, they can certainly sing, dance and look great doing it!

The voices are all strong (as are the bodies) and the songs are well written and witty, plus a couple that are poignant, and anyone who appreciates musical theatre and the beauty of the male form will certainly enjoy this film. I highly recommend watching the included extra features and learning more about the history of the show, how it was made and all the very talented men who made it possible both on camera and off.

This is one DVD that I will watch over and over and over.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing to see   June 26, 2008

Their gimmick is that they're naked. That's it. The songs are lame too. Ok, the song "Nothing but the Radio on" is clever, but that's only a couple of minutes in an entire show. Really not worth buying or even renting.
