Well, bless my beautiful hide! Director Stanley Donen invests this rollicking musical with a hearty exuberance. Howard Keel, with his big-as-all-outdoors baritone, stars as a bold "mountain man" living in the Oregon woods who brings home a bride (plucky songbird soprano Jane Powell) to his six slovenly brothers. Taming the rambunctious brood, Jane proceeds to make gentlemen of them so they can woo sweethearts of their own. But old habits die hard: their flirting gives way to fighting in the film's celebrated barn-raising scene, a lively acrobatic dance number exuberantly choreographed by Michael Kidd. Big brother chimes in with his own brand of advice--an old-fashioned kidnapping! Donen manages to get away with such a politically incorrect plot by investing the boys with a innocent sweetness, most notably the youngest brother played with genial earnestness by Rusty (Russ) Tamblyn (pre-West Side Story). This modest production became a huge hit and remains one of MGM's best-loved musical comedies, an energetic, high-kicking classic. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Excellent movie!   December 30, 2008
This is one of the greatest musicals of all time, and is definitely one of my favorites. Great movie for people new to musicals.

4 out of 5 stars Love the Dancing   November 17, 2008

If you like old movies, this is a good one. The story is not that great but the dancing & singing are very good. You realize what a good singer Howard Keel is & I didn't even know Jane Wyatt cold sing, and she is very good.

2 out of 5 stars Haven't They Heard of Restoration???   November 3, 2008

Although the original film, "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" was a marvelous blending of music, dance and the old pioneer days, this DVD transfer is a disaster. With today's technology, you would think that someone might have struck an anamorphic edition that would expand beyond the realm of 4x3 TV. The color was washed out, there was no dynamics in the sound, and the print looked almost as if no one bothered to look at the negative before it was transferred. I could feel the dirt falling off of the disc. (My old laserdisc edition looked better than this copy). In short, "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers"is a great musical that deserves a restoration before the transfer. BTW, wonderful performance by young Russ Tamblyn (of West Side Story fame).

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful   September 30, 2008
I grew up watching this movie, and when my vhs tape finally became unplayable, I was upset. Finding it on dvd with all the extras and at such a great price, I couldn't turn away. Great movie that everyone should watch!
