Product Description Studio: Uni Dist Corp (music) Release Date: 12/13/2004
Amazon.com Diana Krall: Live at the Montreal Jazz Festival is a portrait of an already-accomplished musician in the process of evolving into a great artist. Always a fine jazz pianist, an expressive singer, and a capable interpreter (mostly of the Great American Songbook), Krall spent little time developing an original voice prior to her marriage to Elvis Costello and her CD The Girl in the Other Room, which features multiple songwriting collaborations with Costello as well as more adventurous choices in cover material (Joni Mitchell's "Black Crow," Tom Waits's "Temptation"). That 2004 recording is the centerpiece of this concert; fully nine of the 13 selections here, including the Waits and Mitchell songs as well as five Costello-Krall compositions, were drawn from it. Purists may lament the lessening of the straight-ahead jazz element in Krall's music (indeed, with its simple major chords and countryish lilt, the original "Narrow Daylight" will inevitably invite comparisons to Norah Jones). But Krall and her excellent band still swing mightily (cf. an extended version of the standard "All or Nothing at All") and improvise like the seasoned jazz pros they are. It's a heady combination: Krall is at least as good an instrumentalist as her contemporaries; add to that her singing and now an interest in songwriting that reflects the influence of pop music as well as jazz, and you have a genuinely unique talent. --Sam Graham

Back to the old days December 24, 2008 Totally the opposite of the sophistication of her "Paris" album; this is true basic wonderful jazz played for fun and with lots of innovation of the moment. It takes me back to the great innovators of the '40s and '50s.
SWINGS LIKE MAD MAN July 13, 2008 i haven't seen her other dvd , but caught this concert while visiting family some while ago . i own it now . with anthony wilson (a killin' brit player) on guitar and peter erskine on drums , you are talking some serious swing my friends . i forget the bassist just at the moment , but he is terrific as well . the three musicians i mentioned by name are all leaders with many recordings in their respective catalogs . it's all here . the full range of expression . great sound and dynamic range do great honor to both whisper quiet intros and delicate solos as well as insanely swinging flights that rip it up . and what groves . expect to be transported . sublime . what a wonderful woman and what an exceptional group of artists . trad jazz 101
The cover picture looks like............. June 17, 2008 ....a vulnerable little girl. [Nice feet]. But the musical performance is a strong as anyone could want. Once again, Diana is giving us well known standards in a manner that is pure perfection. Her vocal and piano genius are well augmented by as fine a group of side-men as you will ever hear...Anthony Wilson is a genius in his own right.
The specific numbers need no introduction....the connection with her audience was fabulous...the technical aspects are all way above standard. Diana Krall is a gift from God, a pure delight. Am I smitten? Of course. Grab this fabulous video, and see why.
Piano Jazz January 1, 2008 Early Diana Krall. Just as good as her other DVD. Wish there were more of her on DVD. Smooooooth jazz.
Casual version of Live in Paris December 8, 2007 I have bought this for half an year, then put it into my DVD player. I think that it must be worse than Live in Paris, but it is not. They're different style, this made me feel so natural and more comfortable. If you have already listened Jazz for more than 15 or 20 years, you may be not like her performance. It seems that her performance is suit for the younger people and is more easy listening. BTW, she is not look like a traditional jazz singer, but a pop/jazz singer more.
