maybe not all their best--but what a feel good experience !!! May 15, 2008 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
The Very Best of the Ames Brothers is another strong single CD compilation of hits and ballads performed ever so wonderfully by The Ames Brothers. The Ames Brothers were so talented they could have done these numbers in their sleep! The sound quality is very good and the artwork stands out as being quite good.
"You You You" has The Ames Brothers crooning their very best--and the backup chorus helps things along even though they never drown out the brothers! The melody is very pretty and I really like "You You You." "I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me" puts The Ames Brothers squarely into the spotlight and that's where they belong! They sing and harmonize so flawlessly; this tune also has just the right tempo to make it a very special highlight of this album. Great! In addition, there's "The Naughty Lady Of Shady Lane;" this cute and peppy little tune shines bright when The Ames Brothers deliver it so well! This is a number I haven't heard before but it all works very well and it's quite nice.
"My Bonnie Lassie" is a sweet number that impresses me with its beauty; and when The Ames Brothers sing "My Love, Your Love" they make this brighter than any other artist ever could! The percussion is also used very well in "My Love, Your Love." Similarly, "It Only Hurts For A Little While" sparkles when The Ames Brothers give this their all; they sing this with all their hearts and souls; and this amazes me a lot. "Summer Sweetheart" is another very pretty number that features The Ames Brothers singing to perfection with a great musical arrangement and there's another highlight when The Ames Brothers sing "The Game Of Love." "The Game Of Love" is quite a tune and I really like it very much.
"Melodie D'Amour" has a fine tempo and when the brothers deliver this they bat it straight out of the ballpark! It's great and "Melodie D'Amour" is perfect for dancing all alone with your sweetheart late at night in your living room. "A Very Precious Love" also shines when The Ames Brothers perform this with great finesse.
"No One But You (In My Heart)" has both singing and harmonizing; and it all works very well. "No One But You (In My Heart)" is a tune I could never tire of hearing; this is anything but elevator music! "China Doll" sounds so sweet and the electric guitar works well; and the CD ends strong with The Ames Brothers performing "Destination Moon." "Destination Moon" is a beautiful number with great strings and this makes a fine ending for this album.
The Ames Brothers really show their talents on this album. I highly recommend this for their fans; and people who like classic pop vocals will not be disappointed.
Harmonious Harmony September 26, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After seeing Ed Ames on a PBS special, I became very interested in hearing the Ames Brothers. What a treat! Some of the songs are a little bit corny, reflective of the innocent era, but the harmonies are superb! The CD is crisp and clean. I highly recommend it.
Not Quite Their Very Best (At RCA Victor) August 14, 2007 Taragon could have alleviated much of the confusion about missing hits indicated in some of the other reviews had they simply called this The Very Best Of The Ames Brothers On RCA Victor. But, even then, it would not quite have met the "very best of" label.
Unfortunately, they threw in one uncharted flipside [Game Of Love] which backed I Saw Esau in late 1956, and two non-hits [tracks 2, and 20]. Of the rest, the afore-mentioned I Saw Essau was a mediocre # 51 Billboard Pop Top 100 in late 1956, Summer Sweetheart, which was the B-side to 49 Shades Of Green [# 49 in October 1956 and not included) itself only reached # 67 Top 100, and Little Serenade, the flip if Stay [# 90 in August 1958 and not included) finished even lower at # 98!
If one is truly thinking "very Best" then, instead of those three non-hits they should have included the two missing hits just mentioned along with any one of the following (or better yet, have expanded the CD to 28 tracks - as Ace Of London does with most of their releases - and chosen any eight:
My Love, My Life, My Happiness - # 29 in October 1953; Man, Man Is For The Woman Made - # 30 flip of The Man With The Banjo in April 1954; Leave It To Your Heart - # 29 in June 1964; Hopelessly - # 25 in October 1954; I'm Gonna Love You - # 84 flip of Forever Darling in March 1956; If You Wanna See Mamie Tonight - # 89 flip of It Only Hurts For A Little While in July 1956; Rockin' Shoes - # 64 flip of Tammy in June 1957; Little Gypsy - # 67 flip of Melodie d'Amour; Someone To Come Home To - # 78 in May 1959. At the moment, this is the best Ames Brothers compilation available which deals with their RCA Victor period. The sound quality is just excellent, and in the insert you get six full pages of background notes written by Collin Escott and a complete discography of the contents. In the meantime, one can only hope that someone is working on a better, trul definitive 2-CD set to include ALL their RCA hits and uncharted B-sides.
The Very Best of the Ames Brothers January 29, 2007 Great old songs by a great old group
Great collection November 12, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
A fantastic collection of their RCA sides which is marred only by the non-appearance of 'Stay', their 1958 charter. How they could include 'Destination Moon' (an LP only track for RCA) in preference to 'Stay' is beyond me. Great sound on all tracks and quite a few in stereo for the first time. A couple of the other reviewers who complain about the non-appearance of tracks such as 'Rag Mop', 'Undecided' etc are way off course. This is a compilation of their RCA releases, not their earlier Coral material which is available elsewhere.
