1 out of 5 stars Could The Audience Members Be The American Idiots???   September 3, 2010

I certainly felt that way watching the "show". The lyrics were insipid. Consider: "I remember her face, but not her name. Now I wonder how what's her name is.". If you find that profound, by all means, you must see the show.
I'm a bit old fashioned in that when I see a musical, I like there to be a storyline. Oh, and the songs too, should have some depth. And characters develop.
I have been an avid theater goer for over 45 years. This was the worst musical I ever saw.

I liked this show. It's lively, with good lyrics, and nice
slow sections. I didn't find the songs terribly theatrical:
describing character, situation, an emotional moment in time.
It was more generic, like a preproduced album forced to follow
a story line. I had very little sense of the show, listening
to the CD.. though enough to get a general idea of the plot.
Some of the numbers are quite good, and seemed familiar; I
guess I heard them on the radio as pop numbers before the
plot was assembled. This is a potpourri of songs from a
band, some of which you will recognize. The good ones are
quite accomplished. There is a nice assortment of uptempo.
and more romantic ones.

5 out of 5 stars Wow...   July 8, 2010

As a HUGE Green Day fan I was honestly skeptical about this recording, but man...was I wrong. The cast performed beautifully on the soundtrack...every song sounds amazing. I'd love to see the broadway show sometime! (Maybe they'll release it on DVD) :)

5 out of 5 stars Surprising   July 4, 2010

This is not the kind of music I usually listen to. A metal musical? Thrashing power chords and adenoidal teenagers? No Way!
Yet, this is a very moving and inspiring piece of work. Green Day's music is very melodic, even at its thrashiest. And many of the musical settings - inspired by the stage director (cellos on 21 Guns) - are quite brilliant.
For a listening experience (stage the musical in your own head), this one's a winner.

5 out of 5 stars American Idiot "Original Cast" - Awesome!!!   June 11, 2010

Having seen the Broadway show (which I love) a few times before purchasing the CD, I need to say it has lived up to my expectations. The cast is 99.9% as fantastic on the CD as they are on stage (you can't beat a live performance!). I truly expect to see a few cast members' solo careers take off in the future!

In addition, I want to say the voices of the cast definitely more than do "Green Day" justice! I think some of them may actually be channeling Billie Joe! Since Green Day was so involved, I feel this transition of their music to Broadway has remained as true to its original form as it possibly could have, yet stands on its own.
