One of the most common complaints about musicals is that the books are flimsy pretexts from which to hang numbers. Wicked runs into the opposite problem: it has a great plot, but too often the songs just get in the way. Based on Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name, Wicked tells us what happened between Glinda the Good and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, before Dorothy showed up in Oz. And the show is lucky to boast a pair of ace leading women in the main roles. As Glinda, Kristin Chenoweth delivers a sensational star turn, displaying a crystal-pure voice and sharp comic timing; Idina Menzel lends her powerful pipes to the tricky role of Elphaba. Unfortunately, you wish they had better material to work with. Stephen Schwartz's pop score is often dragged down by overly synthetic orchestrations and sentimental lyrics (think Chicken Soup for the Witch). Still, at its best Wicked is a seductive slice of popular entertainment that could well give a younger audience a lasting taste for musical theater. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite musicals   July 20, 2010

Wicked is one of my favorite musicals. After I saw it on stage I had to buy the cd. It's really great. If you like musicals. You will defiantly love this cd.

5 out of 5 stars bubbly with excitement   July 19, 2010

I just saw this yesterday in San Francisco, so I might not make perfect sense. Forgive me in advance. I didn't know what to expect, as I had not read the novel. I wasn't prepared to be so emotionally moved by the performance! The voices, the score, the set, the costumes were so much more....and the story. The story was written by a genius, to be sure. A story that I think we are all so familiar with, this made me feel like it was written first. The songs were a beautiful continuation of the story, leading us. Not any filler songs that could be done without. You must see this to understand the reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Reminder   July 14, 2010
R. Pettijohn (San Jose, CA United States)
I originally purchased this CD after attending Wicked in Chicago. Since than my CD has seen a lot of use in my car. I recently purchased another copy from Amazon (much cheaper) because my first one was starting to get a bit worn.

If you have seen the play you will enjoy this CD a good deal - it's filled with the songs but none of the conversations (well, the bits that are in the middle of songs are in there).

If you haven't seen the play this may be a little confusing but the songs are good by themselves, just you may not be able to follow the plot as well as someone that has seen the play.

The songs vary slightly from the live versions, but that's only because it seems, at least to me, that each location, Chicago or SF (the two places I've seen it) perform the scores just slightly differently based on the musically abilities of the leads.

All and all it's a great CD and well worth having, more so if you enjoyed the play.

5 out of 5 stars A really awesome Cd (BB smiles.)   June 23, 2010

Cd came in excellent shape, still wrapped, security stupid tape, a big pain in the Butt. Not the fault of seller, Manufacture.

Wish they would think of a dif way to seal the Cd's cause even though our Cd's are protected, they ruin the nice brand new Cd case. Can even scratch the case, What a pain, when it refuses to come away in one strip. Anyway back to the Recording. Clean Cd. And original Wicked Cast from Broadway. I love this Cd, & only hope some one decides to make a Dvd of this show, like they've done in the past with other Productions, using the original Cast, which is the best! The play off from Adina, & Kristen is just a Broadway treasure to behold, & add to your Collection.

They're stage presence, make it easy for imatators to imagine they can only do better, but pale in comparison, (Especially that glowing complexion) To the original Dynamic, duo, who will ever be Glendaa the Good, & the Misunderstood, (It isn't easy being, painted Green.) Adina Menzel, as the most sweet, caring witch of the West...

This recording is soo much fun, Enjoy the beautiful duo voices of the most unlikely Bffs ever. & listen to songs, like Popular!, sung by Kristen. Who's Glendaa the good's, change of self, centered loving heart, leads to a most wonderous result. & a true Green friend who is just too intellegent for the land of Oz. Awhh Ya...
Thank you Amazon again, & Import Cd's once more, you Delivered on time, & Condition as promised. Glad I could rely on you again.
Love the Cd soo!! Lov - BB
