A Slight Concern about Sonics February 16, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Other reviewers have aptly commented on the musical content of this recording and I won't clog up space by echoing their high opinions. But there is a slight fly in the ointment about this CD and that is the recorded sound.
RCA was a leader in recorded sound all through the fifties but by the end of the decade, upstart labels like Command, Time, Solid State, etc. were producing "Stereo Spectacular" recordings that began to outshine and then eclipse RCA's reputation. Audiophiles with the new stereo hi-fis flocked to these recordings to show off their new equipment and RCA needed something to oneup the competition and get back to the head of the class. What they devised was the ill-fated Dynagroove process.
The theory behind Dynagroove was that since everyone's stereo equipment produced at least a little distortion, the Dynagroove recordings would be pre-distorted in opposite ways to counteract your system's existing distortions. Only a moments reflection will have you realize that unless the distortion and counter-distortion matched exactly, they would magnify each other rather than canceling each other out. I still remember buying my first Dynagroove recording and being shocked by how downright awful it sounded in the loud passages. Many people quickly learned to avoid them.
RCA has been trying to repair the damage done by the process to their recordings ever since and this recording shows considerable evidence of restoration in that it sounds almost good. The sound only shows artifacts of the old Dynagroove process on two or three tracks which are slightly overloaded on the loudest passages. It is never less than listenable and only calls attention to its sonic deficiencies in a few places. But if you were hoping to find a sonic gem along the lines of one of the classic RCA "Living Presence" recordings, you'll want to know that this isn't one of them.
Hawaiian War Chant May 23, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I love the version of the "Hawaiian War Chant" on this album. It is driving, thoroughly "Americanized" and yet great fun.
Overall, should Hawaiian music be given the big band treatment? Well, if you don't think so, just argue it out with Arthur Godfrey.
I also thought Mancini's use of the "solid body harpsichord" to arrange Hawaiian music was something else - never repeated, so far as I know.
Henry Mancini's Hawaii CD July 8, 2005 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
This was a vinyl that was hard for me to give up because of no more record players, so I was very happy to see I could find it in CD version from Amazon. I'm very pleased with the whole transaction from purchase to receipt. Great communication on shipping date(s) and availability. Thank you.
