Dionne Warwick's vocals were never more strong, more vulnerable than when she sang the songs of Burt Bacharach and Hal David--and, oh, yeah, "Who Can I Turn To" and the theme from "Valley of the Dolls," the two non-Bacharach/David songs included among the 24 singles collected here. Both technically and emotionally, this was an unstoppable team: from the drama of "Don't Make Me Over" to the tongue-in-cheek backing singers on "Are You There (With Another Girl)," the barely veiled civil-rights message of "Reach Out for Me" to the deceptively bouncy "Do You Know the Way to San Jose," this CD sheds light on one of the most perfect marriages of pop form and content this side of Sinatra's classic Capitol work. --Rickey Wright

Like many others, Dionne Warwick's first few recordings were her best. I particular like "Anyone who has a heart". The new cover of that by Shelby Lynne is different but also worth listening to. Some of Dionne Warrick's (her real name) newer ones are OK too. It's too bad she sued Burt Bacharach; they were a great team.

Just a note to my worldwide fans- I have opened up my review site to influential people who may include notes of interest to certain selections. I am busy now, investigating paranormal activity in millionaire's homes (and being paid the current minimum wage!). It doesn't matter people if I have to stay awhile and they put me up in a tent with no running water. I will just dent their Rolls Royce with my Yugo on the way out.
But, at least I found a ghost of a chance to write this review. To begin- this music is a refreshing turn away from selections I've recently reviewed. I like all types of music and the last thing I want all of you to believe is that your beloved Metamorpho is predictable. Besides, sometimes you need softer, beautiful music to get reflection up to snuff. I have, yet, another gem for you all and here it is.
Musically, I think of the 60's as one of the most diverse periods for popular music. We were treated to many new and exciting sounds. One of the most infallable sounds in popular music from that time is captured with this album. I really don't know how to describe the sound - easy-going, orchestrated swing, jazzy, suave, heartfelt? Well, this list could include reflection goal oriented for sure. (!) When you have a superb songwriting duo such as Burt Bacharach and Hal David - the songs approach a spiritual sublime. Add the vocal perfection of Dionne Warwick in with this then you have heavenly sound on earth.
Alot of these songs convey the vulnerability of women at that time. Heartbreak, hurt, and the longing to be loved. The fact that men wrote them is even more astounding. But that is an indication of the talent and the ability to tap into human emotion. There aren't many that measured up to that duo.
But Dionne......ahhh.... Dionne. The inflection in that beautiful voice, the raising and lowering of phrases totally appropriate to the material. Listen to her heartfelt declaration on "Don't Make Me Over", the hurt on "Walk On By", the insistent charge of "Always Something There to Remind Me", or the grace and softness on "Alfie". You all know what she can do by now. All the familiar tunes can be found on your local adult oriented pop music station. But, even the lesser known songs are a pleasure and a treasure.
And the arrangments on these selections are dead on. There is no excess here. The instruments are craftily crafted to add to the sum total of the mood they are trying to create. I love listening to this - how they use the orchestra. Violins lovingly used- a little piano run - the horns coming in at just the right time. This, my people, is a definite joy in life. Of course the atmosphere in which you listen to this is essential. It is your choice certainly. But, for me, I come home from a hard day saving people from ghosts and make myself a martini. Then I put this on, plop down on the couch, take my Seer's hat off, close my eyes and let this music wash over me. It clenses me from the bad energy vibes I picked up during the day. A remedy for sure. But one that works for your beloved Seer.
In closing, this album is righteously good. Essential for my fan club. Essential for new-comers (catch other reviews-the real drift!) and those that need positive uplift in life. Now you must excuse me. My martini is getting warm!

This is a collection of great tracks, don't get me wrong. However I would have been willing to shell out a few extra bucks for an expanded double CD of Rhino's excellent double LP compilation. Instead, we get a single CD which is, to borrow the euphemism, "a few tracks short..." If you never owned the LP set you might not miss them; however one of my favorites, "Amanda," was omitted, so I feel just a bit short-changed.
Nonetheless, it's probably still the best Dionne Warwick compilation out there.
Soft velvet November 3, 2007
I remember when, years and years ago, the melody of "Anyone who had a heart" was flowing through the Summer, infusing something like a sort of reliance in the future and in the affections.
Dionne Warwick !
A very hard second name which sounds like the sliding of a chain.
But the first name is the winding of a velvet, the same velvet which is found in her voice.
In Dionne Warwick's "HER ALL-TIME GREATEST HITS" we
listen to 24 windings of warm, sensual, caressing velvets rich in "nuances", in reflections, in shades
and in half-tones jazz and pops.
In today's music often overgrown with weeds, class and distinction of an artist like Dionne Warwick are precious flowers.
