Hard To Find Music August 10, 2008 Like other reviewers, I was disappointed with the "O Brother Where Art Thou" soundtrack and after much searching on the internet, I found this cd. I purchased it for my father-in-law as a christhmas gift since he only listens to bluegrass. He's thanked me many times for the cd and I highly recommend it to any Kossoy sisters fans.
Some Sad Morning April 19, 2007 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I confess that I bought these CD's only for the "Some Glad Morning" track by the sisters. Let me tell you that they really came together for that song, because none of their others are worth listening to. Their voices quickly become annoying and their songs are irrevelant.
The other two CD's however pick up some of the slack, and if you like good bluegrass, then they won't disappoint. However, if you only want that one song, I suggest another means of getting it.
Good Value for rare music February 11, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I just finished listening to an old 5 record boxed set album from about 1957, Folk Songs & Instrumental Music of the Southern Mountains - Murray Hill Records 927950.
It appears that at least two of these CDs are remastered versions of that release as they are title for title the same in the same order -- namely record 1 sides A&B and record 3 A&B.
I spent some time tracking down the Kossoy sisters on the web and listened to their interview on On Point, on WBUR-FM Feb 23, 2003 (archived on the WBUR website) well worth your time to listen as they play and feature a number of old songs as well as some hilarious songs of their own writing. Wikipedia does not, as yet, have an article on them but really should.
It would appear that the record companies or whoever owns the rights to these old recordings ripped off these ladies as the first they heard of their inclusion in OBWAT, was when one of them was in the audience of the movie!
The record company apparently did all the negotiations with the Coen Bros Company and neglected to find or to tell the Kossoy Sisters.
I don't know if there was fallout in the aftermath of their having discovered this, but it may be a partial explanation as to why their I'll Fly Away is missing without explanation from the movie soundtrack, which I also have.
But still their music is special as is some of the other music on these CDs.
Much of the music on the CD featuring Hobart Smith, Etta Baker, Lacey Phillips, was originally recorded in the field in the Applachain Mountains of NC, VA, and KY. This is a rare collection! You might want to look for the 1957 era 5 record set as well. They are available on eBay etc occasionally for little money.
here is the real version of I'll Fly Away!! - (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) November 25, 2005 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
If you were disappointed with the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack not having the accurate version of "I'll Fly Away" by the Kossoy Sisters, as heard in the actual film, then you are in luck! The genuine film version in included in this 3 CD set. Many folks (including me) would have paid this much just to get that one song which is not on the film soundtrack CD, with this box set, you get the whole Kossoy Sisters Bowling Green album (recorded 1959) from whence the song used in the film came, and not only that, you get 2 more great old Tradition bluegrass albums to boot, this is an unbelievable value for scarcely more than the price of a single CD - not to mention that the Kossoy Sisters album included is now out of print - just incredible!
