Engaging entry to classical music October 1, 2008 From a recommendation of a friend at work, I purchased this for my 4-year-old son who appears to be developing an interest in exploring all types of music. My partner and I enjoy classical, so we didn't want to neglect that genre.
Upon first listening to it, I felt I wanted the narrators to shut up so I could hear the music because the renditions were so faithful and beautiful. Then, I realized that the story was engaging as well, and the editors had carefully chosen each piece for each part of the tale. There are plenty of pauses between each bit of narration to allow the music alone to be part of the story.
My son had no such reservations. He loved the Vivaldi CD so much, he can't sleep without it.
The stories are about children, real or imagined, who interacted with the composers in their time period. In the Vivaldi one, I believe it's a story of a real child and how her relationship with Vivaldi helped her find her family. In the Beethoven one, the story is about a young boy whose family offers the composer a room for rent.
I'd say offer these CDs to a child with a musical bent, and don't let these CDs be the ONLY way they hear classical music. However, they are an excellent companion to "adult" classical CDs.
Mozart's Magical Fantasy June 14, 2000 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
Great way to introduce any child old enough to have a developed imagination to classical music. These stories are set to classical music. For example, Mozart's Magical Fantasy is basically the story of the Magic Flute only a contemporary girl narrates and is actually part of the story. The background has the music from the opera. It really captures the imagination and my kids want to hear it over and over again. They go to school talking about Princess Pamina and Prince Tamino. They make me wait in the driveway for the CD to finish to see how it ends (even though they've heard it 50 times. Vivaldi's tape is about an orphan girl and also very interesting. This is a great way to introduce a child to classial music.
