Amazon.com essential recording If the bazillion packagings and repackagings of Mahalia Jackson's music confound you and you don't know where to start, this expertly compiled, carefully annotated double-disc box set is for you. Jackson wasn't just gospel music's first international superstar--she was among its earliest adherents and inventors. Working with the great composer and former blues singer Thomas A. Dorsey in the late 1930s, Jackson gave a distinctly blues-trained, jazzy sass and grace to Dorsey's material and the other hymns and spirituals she sang. More than any other performer, she helped to define gospel music itself as a transcendent, rootsy, melismatic, and heady spiritual sound. Culled from her sides for Columbia in the 1950s and 1960s, some of the arrangements in the set are not ideal and may sound quite a bit dated, but that voice shines and soars and dives straight to the center of your heart. Whether backed by a simple organ or piano or with full studio accompaniment, Jackson's booming, instantly recognizable contralto is indescribable, exciting, and forever a wonder to behold. And if you think that's an exaggeration, you don't own this record. --Mike McGonigal

MAHALIA JACKSON, GOSPELS, SPIRITUALS AND HYMNS October 2, 2008 Purchased with 2 other of Jackson's CD's we found this one to be the most disappointing. Too loud and raucus for our taste. Our one and only recording of Mahalia is "The Power and the Glory" with the Percy Faith orchestra, a wonderful rich and moving experience, and we were hoping for the same with our current 3 purchases. Definitely not the same quality we were expecting. We didnt mind the other 2 but really dont like this one at all, sorry.
Mahalia Reigns July 26, 2008 Purchase of this set was for musical experience rather than the religious message. Therefore Disc 2 is the highlight and Disc 1 more for those after religious inspiration.
What a Voice May 8, 2008 This is a great collection of songs and the arrangements are so great. Didn't it Rain is one of my favorites since I was a kid and no one can sing it like Mahalia! Love the piano on this album too!
Mahalia Jackson March 29, 2008 I do not regret the purchase of Gospels, Spirituals, and Hymns. Sometimes we need to hear frm those whose shoulders we stand on. We need to hear the word of the Lord from one who preaches through song, someone like Sister Mahalia Jackson. I highly recomend this set for your music library.
The One and Only January 17, 2008 Well, if you are into Gospel (or just into great singing, for that matter), you need look no further; simply put, I don't see how you could do without this collection. Provides a great selection from Jackson's repertoire, and rare gems.
