Isaac Hayes' 1969 solo debut Hot Buttered Soul set a soulful tone for the decade that followed, influencing innumerable artists and turning on a more conventional audience to the genre. Therefore it comes as no surprise that three quarters of that record are included on this compilation from his 1968-`77 Stax Records resume (though they are heavily edited to fit the 32-song, two-CD format). Renowned as one of his generation's greatest songwriters and arrangers, Hayes punctuates his creations with hints of r&b, funk, jazz and soul. Examples here include the indelible "Theme From Shaft," a funked-up cover of Burt Bacharach's and Hal David's "The Look of Love," the slow-grooving "Do Your Thing" and a previously unreleased gospel standard, "His Eye Is on the Sparrow." The inspired packaging includes a four-track DVD that features a trio of Hayes' performances from the 1972 WATTSTAX Festival at the Los Angeles Coliseum--providing as much evidence of the magnitude of Hayes' esteem as this starter set for anyone seeking an introduction to a legendary artist. --Scott Holter

4 out of 5 stars Back In Da Day   September 19, 2008
This CD by Isaac Hayes was actually purchased for someone else. I was able to sample some of the songs and didn't realize that he actually made some of them. Great Ultimate Collection and it was a great price. The cheapest by far.

If you don't have any Issac Hayes in your collection, get this one and you'll be skrait....

2 out of 5 stars Isaac Hayes- A True Fan's Memoir   September 17, 2008
I placed this cd in my cart a month before purchasing it. I purchased it immediately proceeding his untimely death. This cd is for a true Isaac Hayes fan. I do not find this to be a definitive collaboration of his mainstream music. I would have appreciated this cd much more with a few of the dance titles made famous by Mr. Hayes such as "Zeke the Freak" and "I Can't Turn Around".
I will probably end up giving this cd to someone in the future who is a "die-hard" Isaac Hayes fan, and maybe if and when I listen to and view this 2 disc cd with a bonus dvd, end up keeping it for myself!

5 out of 5 stars One flaw   July 14, 2008
The look of love is only a mere 3 minutes. An absolute tease!

But, don't let that stop you from getting this masterpiece. Luckily, I have the track on another CD but it would've been nice to have ALL my Ike favorites on one CD.

5 out of 5 stars Classic greatness overlooked by the success of "Shaft"   May 31, 2008
Look, we all know Isaac Hayes from his "Shaft" theme and the voice of Cook on "South Park." And we've heard that he was influential with the Stax recordings of the 1960s. This album reminds/refreshes/reteaches that this man was GREAT! I'm a white guy not particularly into soul and R&B, but this is great music! Isaac Hayes has a solid voice, far more versatile than "Shaft" ever indicates -- and he is a fantastic arranger. Hell, Burt Bacharach and a dozen other songwriters from the '60s & 70s should bow to Isaac Hayes for the way he took their sugar-coated pop and gave it heart. This album doesn't cover everything Isaac Hayes did - and some of the takes are shortened versions of longer songs - but for me it's a good, broad-based starting point for a future of some fun music exploration. (P.S. Make sure you listen with good bass speakers or earphones - 'sounds a lot richer.)
