| Editorial Reviews:
Album Description Some of the biggest names in Russian opera headline this live 1973 performance of a Rimsky-Korsakov rarity from Moscow's historic Bolshoi Theater. Based on a historic incident of Ivan the Terrible's marriage to a commoner, this opera abounds in exciting drama, gorgeous melodies, and luxuriant orchestration.

Studio Recording in good stereo sound August 18, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Opera D'Oro labels this as a Live performance. It's not. It's a good stereo studio recording from the early 70's with a terrific Bolshoi cast (Vishnevskaya, Atlantov, Nesterenko, Arkipova) and very ably conducted by Fouat Mansourov. I have the Gergiev recording as well (which has the advantage of a libretto), but I prefer this Bolshoi recording as having much more of a unique Rimsky flavor to it.
