Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
Back To The River is Susan Tedeschi's 2008 album, her second recording for Verve Forecast. Susan writes, sings and plays on a hard-driving collection of new songs that offer an emotionally honest look at love and life. Produced by George Drakoulias (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Black Crowes, Jayhawks) it also features performances by Derek Trucks (who also produced 1 track), Gary Louris and Doyle Bramhall II. Tedeschi's Verve Forecast debut, Hope and Desire, focused on her amazing vocal talents as an interpreter of other's songs. This time out she turns her pen, guitar and powerful voice to her own work having written or co-written all but one song.

Susan just keeps getting better. Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhall, along with Susan give this cd as good guitar playing as it gets. Tom Petty's producer gives a new cooler sound to Susan, imo. I really like all the tracks, not just one or two. Check it out if you like rock and roll with killer guitars!

4 out of 5 stars Best since "Just Won't Burn"   November 27, 2008

Susan gets back to her original harder-edge style on this one. Although her last couple albums were excellent, they were more laid-back and quieter than this. Derek Trucks' guitar makes a good song great, and does so on several songs. Other guest guitarists help too.

Ms Tedeschi is possessed of great talents, but if this album is any indication, musical judgement and taste are not among them.

She has surrounded herself with people who, for the most part, are very good at playing notes, but don't have a clue about playing music. Every single track is overly serious and none of the swing.

Someone once said, "if it can't be done on 8 tracks, it's not worth doing." This album certainly supports that view!

Ms Tedeschi would be better served sparser arrangements and partners who can play the blues. Listening to Teddy Wilson's recording with Billie Holiday would be a good place for her to start.

5 out of 5 stars If you love rockin' blues with a great guitar backing you're going to love this   November 12, 2008

I first heard Susan Tedeschi on "Austin City Limits." Her gritty voice and down to earth style are what got me looking for more of her recordings. People who say rock is dead haven't heard Susan playing.

She's written every song on this CD except for one cover instead of her previous release of all covers. Plus, she's got her husband Derek Trucks playing guitar and guest appearance singers like Tony Joe White (the Swamp Fox) on "Back to the River."

My favorites:

"Back to the River"
"Break in the Road"
