WHEN D0 l START?!?!? November 25, 2008 Buster proves he's a New York doll with his diverse stylings of diverse styles of music. Not buying this album is a crime to which you too will be saying, ''Good Morning Judge''.
Rebirth of a musical chameleon June 21, 2008 I have to admit I like most of Johansen's work and this is probably his biggest seller. The band is tight and sound great, in a sense this sounds like a group intent on having fun. You have to admire the integrity of a band that is so talented going so far against the grain of what's popular at the time and simply making a loose party album. The idea of the leader of the New York Dolls performing lounge jazz is an absurdity in itself but the fact that he does it so well is equally disconcerting. Aside from the band's performance Johansen/ Poindexter's voice is never subpar. Why he has remained on the lower fringes of musical fame is a puzzling concern among his fans. I can only wonder if the fact that he can perform a style of music so well why lampooning it has caused many of his critics to dismiss him prematurely.
Fun Mixture of Swing, Jazz, and Novelty August 5, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Buster Poindexter is the self- titled album from musical veteran David Johansen- a man who has made a name for himself as a member of the New York Dolls and also a solo artist. Johansen came up with the Buster Poindexter moniker back in 1987 when this, the debut album for him and his band, was first released.
This album is unique for its jazz/big band/swing sound thanks to the contributions from saxophones, trumpets, violins, and other instruments. There are a large number of musicians who make appearances and who play their instruments in these songs. The individual contributions and the unique musical sounds are one of many reasons for the album's unique sound and commercial success.
Most people have likely never heard of David Johansen or Buster Poindexter but most everyone is familiar with at least one song on this album: The party tune Hot Hot Hot. This song is often heard at celebrations of every type and while most people instantly recognize the tune, the majority does not realize that Buster Poindexter is the artist behind the music. Of course, Johansen didn't really write this song- it was actually composed by Arrow, a artist from the Caribbean. But it is the cover version on this album that has made the song an international hit and, of all the songs Johansen has been responsible for in the past thirty plus years, this song is the best known of all.
Besides the fun aspects of Hot Hot Hot, Cannibal, and other tunes, Buster Poindexter also offers some novelty tunes, ballads, and other covers. "Good Morning Judge" is a fun novelty tune, and Johansen is in fine vocal form; belting out the vocals in Louis Armstrong style as he sings about going to face the judge following a mishap with the law. The ballads on this album are also good, particularly the power ballad Are You Lonely for me Baby. This song is the strongest among the ballads and it offers the added vocal talents of one of Poindexter's female singers, Soozie Tyrell.
There are a few covers on this album as well, and the one that most everyone will recognize is House of the Rising Sun, the song made popular by the Animals back in the late 1960's. Buster Poindexter's version is a good one, and it offers a different sound from the original, with less music and more vocal emphasis. Are You Lonely for Me Baby is also a cover of an old tune. It's one of the albums best, and it's one I try to listen to whenever I pop the CD in the drive.
Overall, "Buster Poindexter" is a fun album that offers a combination of swing, jazz, blues, and other elements. It makes a nice alternative to mainstream rock/pop and it's a good choice of CD's when you're in the mood for something a little different and feel like having fun.
Hot! Hot! Hot! May 26, 2004 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
Very nice album! I Like "Screwy Music" and "Good Morning Judge" (originaly from Wyonnie Harris)the most. "Smack Dab In The Middle" is another swing classic, "Bad Boy" is Rhythm 'n' Blues classic from the fifties of The Jive Bombers, "Hot Hot Hot" is remake of Arrow's carribean dance hit, "Are You Lonely For Me Baby" is a beautiful soul (hit for Al Green, Otis Redding, written by fabulous Bert Berns). And here it is a remake of his own song, beautiful "Heart Of Gold". Very enjoyable record!

This recording will get any party rocking. The choice of cover tunes are just delightful and Buster's voice is in fine form. They rock, croon, shimee, and shuffle. Hot Hot Hot will always live on as an ultiamte party tune. Cannibal fits the same mode as well. But Buster's crooning in The House Of The Rising Sun is almost unbeatable. Good Morning Judge and Screwy Music make me laugh and Oh Me Oh My almost makes me cry with emotion. Overall, this product is first class and will liven up anyone's day.
