4 out of 5 stars Nostalgic Theme Album   August 12, 2008

In the fifties when the poor impoverished, and indeed scarce, soundtrack LP was struggling for existence, record companies - in their efforts to popularise movie music - released records such as this - the Theme Album. Many orchestras of the day dabbled in this "new" type of orchestral recording which was essentially putting onto disc cover versions of theme melodies from various films. And one of the most popular orchestras working in this field at the time was that of film composer Victor Young.
Young was responsible for several of these albums and this CD contains two of his more popular LPs that were put out by Decca Records in 1954 and 1956 (the year he died). All of the themes heard here are one of a kind, beautifully arranged, lush sounding, very easy on the ear and
completely inoffensive.
But don't let that put you off for there are some pleasent surprises on
the disc! For instance, the second track on the album is Max Steiner's
beguiling "Selena's Waltz" from the Jane Wyman Warner picture SO BIG
(1953). This is interesting since it is the only piece of music ever
recorded from Steiner's lovely score. There is also the attractive
concerto-like "Nightfall" from a forgotten 1954 Si-Fi movie entitled GOG composed by Harry Sukman and here Sukman himself is guesting in Young's orchestra for the beautiful piano solo. Sukman also features on piano in the sumptuous theme from the 1947 melodrama LOST MOMENT by the Russian composer Danielle Amfitheatrof. Also we have the only recording of Franz Waxman's Theme For Lisa from Hitchcock's REAR WINDOW with a piano solo from Ray Turner.

These albums also gave Young himself the opportunity to include some of his own film compositions. In this regard there are his themes from a few Republic B pictures he scored such as his nice gently loping western theme from the colourful JUBILEE TRAIL (1954), his title theme from GERALDINE (1953) and his lovely Bon Soir from PERILIOUS JOURNEY (1954).

Other standout tracks on this comprehensive album are the gorgeous love theme from the 1937 Warner picture ANOTHER DAWN (called here Theme Romantique) by the great Erich Wolfgang Korngold with a magnificent violin solo from Anatole Kaminsky. There's a beautiful reading of Alfred Newman's theme for Diana from THE ROBE (1953) and Dimitri Tiomkin's theme from THE HIGH & THE MIGHTY (1954) hauntingly whistled by one Muzzy Marcellino.

So a nice and somewhat interesting album with the welcome inclusion of
some obscure material that collectors won't regret having in their
collection. The Mono sound is adequate.
