Amazon.com Yes, Virginia, there was a Sesame Street before the Age of Elmo. This 1993 collection highlights the role of music in the long-running series from Children's Television Workshop, and reminds us that such Jim Henson creations as Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster, and Ernie and Bert were once part of a true ensemble of Muppet superstars. Nothing against Elmo, of course: kids adore him and he makes enough appearances in this anthology (including the show-stopping "Happy Tappin' with Elmo") to keep today's tykes happy. Also included is Ernie's classic "Rubber Duckie" (really, who doesn't know the words to that?), Oscar's anthemic "I Love Trash," you-know-who's "C Is for Cookie," and Big Bird's Big Finale, a rendition of "Sing" that includes the entire cast. There are 27 tunes in all, and they don't all involve singing puppets: Ladysmith Black Mambazo turns up for one track, and the "Sesame Street Jam Session" includes some actual playing of instruments. --Tom Keogh

Not the trip down memory lane that I expected... August 25, 2010 deevelyn (NY, NY) After reading several of the reviews, I finally purchased this DVD in May 2009 for my then 4 month old, to build our collection of educational DVDs that I would like too. I grew up on Sesame Street (still remember my own mom's excitement when we watched the very first episode together), so was looking forward hearing favorite songs as listed in the reviews. However, I should have paid attention to the others who noted that many of the songs are just snippets. I was also bored with the whole looking for La-la-la'ers plot. Even more importantly, my daughter never really got into this DVD, only paying attention to the same four or so songs that I really enjoyed (our favorite is "Count It Higher"). Because of this, this DVD is really only played when we're bored with her other DVDs or when I am in the mood to dance with her to specific songs. I plan to look more carefully at some other Sesame Street collections to find what I am looking for, and if the songs/skits that we like from this DVD are on another collection, I'll donate this one.
For the whole family July 31, 2010 daffodil This DVD is a fun collection of musical numbers from the entire 25 year history of the show, many of which I recalled from my own childhood watching Sesame Street. It is upbeat, showcases some of the celebrities that have visited the show over the years as well as most of our favorite characters. One great thing about this is that it doesn't star Elmo, he's there in limited doses. If you were a fan of the show as a kid, you will find yourself singing along to many of the songs along with your child.
Any age will do. June 6, 2010 S. Keefe (Portland, OR) I actually purchased this for my Grandson - he is in High School now - because of one of the songs he wanted to use for an audition to a top choir at school. He was watching it in my room with me and enjoying many songs he remembered from years ago. My Son, in his 40's now, heard the music and came in to see what we were watching. HE remembered many of the songs too! No matter your age, if you grew up in the USA and had a television, you know these lyrics. I have yet to see anyone that can't sing-along and tap their toes. Pure enjoyment and a piece of our collective memory. Now THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT!
The Best Video Ever!!!!! May 11, 2010 Michelle Decker (long island, ny) I kid you not when I say that my Daughter no matter her mood (she could be hysterical crying) would crack a smile and laugh once I put this video on. It was one of the first things I played for her, besides the Baby Einstein collection, but it captivated her attention immediately. She is 15 months now and tries to sing along with it as best as she can when I put it on. I started letting her watch it at around 3 months and still no matter how many times is still intersted.
The songs are fun! Like other buyers said it has some of the Sesame Street classics like the original "Rubber Duckie" and "C is for Cookie" song which makes it extra special. I highly recommmend this if you need something fun for your kids to watch while cooking dinner or taking a shower. This is the best video money can buy and it is hard to find!!!!!!!!!
Nieces and Nephews Love It! April 23, 2010 Arthur & Rebecca (Kentucky) I bought this for my niece's birthday, and she and her siblings LOVE IT! Enjoy! Classic Sesame Street.
