always riding Jeff.... October 13, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I know Lorber music from his first works and ,also if trough the time it becomes too " lite " also if smooth , but this work seems to contain great music and also some old style more Jazzy oriented things . Here and there wonderfully played Rhodes things make me so good!!! I can suggest it also to more Jazz oriented customers . The only bad thing to me is some so annoying terribile vocals part ........ u know what I mean .... " babe , babe " and so on !!!! Without vocals plssssssss the next one !
Very Nice! October 9, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Upon first impression this CD is very nice from start to finish. Its been a while since I have listened to a CD that made such a great first impression. I have no complaints at all. The musical compositions are satisfying along with great sound quality. This CD recording has a very good since of spacial presentation as well. This CD sounds much better throughout than his prior project.
Jeff is Indeed Back!!!! October 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Having been a TOTAL fan of Jeff since he came on the scene in the mid-70s, I am keenly aware of the many different avenues he has taken - some with mixed results, ALL definitely worth a listen. In his last two outings his mainstream audience may have thought he was a bit adventurous as he veered somewhat from his tried and true formula of smooth jazz outings with R&B leanings.
Here he is back in fine form with standouts cuts (for me, at least) being Come On Up, You've Got Something, Take Control (both featuring dynamite back-up vocals creating a sensuous, funky mood), Night Sky, and the title track.
Jeff has been successfully and consistently providing quality smooth jazz interpretations for over 3 decades now. It is indeed futile to try and put a finger on the best "this' or "that" as he is an artist whose work always commands attention.
I hiiiiiiiiiighly recommend.
SmoothJazz.com Review October 2, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Composer/producer/keyboard legend/elder statesman for Smooth Jazz Jeff Lorber has done it again! His Peak album debut HEARD THAT is, as expected, absolutely stellar. The first radio single sets a torrid pace for the rest of the set, with its bluesy, old-school funk treatment of Amy Winehouse's Grammy-winning hit "Rehab." It'll remind you of the vibe on Ramsey Lewis' "In Crowd." On HEARD THAT, Jeff returns to his fusion-funk roots after the more jazz-oriented HE HAD A HAT album from 2007, and ensures the groove by collaborating with legendary pop, R&B producer Rex Rideout. HEARD THAT is amply infused with a pop, jazz, R&B, and Blues flavor, and naturally has that classic Lorber signature taste of 80's Fusion sound running through it all. Jeff acknowledges that "Jazz thrives on being a collaborative medium," and including players like Rick Braun, Paul Jackson, Jr. and Gerald Albright as sidemen doesn't hurt either! So what's Jeff Lorber's secret to his success and longevity? He answers, "My work ethic and the time I spend focusing on writing... I'm open to inspiration and ideas 24 hours a day." And that's exactly why we get awesome projects like HEARD THAT with every new Jeff Lorber release! ~SCOTT O'BRIEN
