Fantastic, Fresh New Music From an Ancient People August 12, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The careful leaks which preceded the official release of this CD gave a glimpse into what would be found. This can be dangerous because it can leave the buyer feeling unsatisfied with the final product. Not so here. This CD is the freshest I have heard in a very long time. From ancient sounds and a song written in the ancient Huichol language to a modern, disco remix version of that same song, this CD is a musical odyssey across distance and time. The Huichol are a small group of true survivors called "The Ancient Ones" by the Aztecs. This CD proves that they are very far from being out of step with the modern world. This is all acoustic music, brilliantly written, performed and recorded. Listeners will hear what appear to be Tejano sounds here, but keep in mind that this is the origin of those sounds which migrated north in the late 1800s. I would also put the fiddlers in this band up against the very best in the world like Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy. The style is effortless yet yields such skilled sound that I found myself pressing the repeat button all the way through this CD the first time. Those who know the fiddling style of Johnny Gimble of Texas will simply love this. Go directly to "Mi Nina" and dance!
This CD blends ancient sounds and rhythms with modern sounds. Each track is upbeat, spirited and so bright that if you listen in a car, be sure you set the cruise control to avoid a ticket. This CD is so professional in every way that it is obvious this is just the first commercial effort by this band. There will certainly be others. I feel from listening to this CD that this is just to let us know what this band can do. They certainly have my attention and I will be looking for future releases. This CD is exciting because it makes a statement about an ancient people but it is also just great music. Pan Parios!
