The world mourned when the legendary Malian bluesman Ali Farka Toure died in 2006. But, as this sterling debut CD from his guitarist/percussionist son Vieux shows, all was not lost. Though his father didn't want him to become a musician, the younger Toure woodshedded on the down low, and delivered a surprisingly strong tribute to his dad that blends Mande, and Sonrai musical styles with pop and Caribbean influences. Toure's spare guitar work and his vivid vocals would make his daddy proud, especially on the reggae-fied video single "Ana." The incredible kora virtuoso Toumani Diabate lends his plectral prowess to "Toure De Niafunke" and "Diabate." Singer Issa Bamba's energetic voice illuminates the bold backbeat of "Courage." The hypnotic "Tabara" and "Diallo" feature father and son together. Inheritance is an honored tradition in Africa, and, if this CD is any indication, the Toure legacy is in good hands in the 21st century. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

4 out of 5 stars Good kid   April 20, 2008
Vieux Farka Toure might not be as good as the best you remember from Ali Farka Toure (a bit like Femi Kuti isn't quite like Fela Kuti) but he still very much deserves your support. He certainly makes it very easy to give it to him. 4 stars because I still have his dad in mind, 5 stars otherwise.

Excellent music by Vieux Farka Toure; music to meditate by, daydream, have fun and feel refreshed afterward - return for more!

5 out of 5 stars Truly Memorable..   June 30, 2007
There is so much life these days in the Mali music, it's quite inspiring that so many people in Mali are inspired by creativity, and in turn create a positive improvement of their culture. From start to finish Vieux's debut recording will be know as a classic. It's hard to say what the highlights are because there are many (pretty much every track except "Sangare"). "Courage" was awesome because it fused a new style - rock/blues/Malian into a cohesive whole. "Ana" (which has a nice music video), is reggae beautifully done, with horns, organ, multi layered vocals. There are two songs done with Tounami Diabate. The final track "Diabate" is relaxed and contains a spiritual vibe. But of course the songs with his father, Ali Farka Toure, are worth the price alone. Ali was hardly able to walk, and his guitar has to be placed in his lap. This makes the up-tempo "Diallo", that much more emotional. Soon before Ali passed this life, his listened to his's son's album in his sickbed, exclaiming "That's my son!". It easy to see why Ali was proud. Music and life are well...

4 out of 5 stars A Really Really Good Start   May 6, 2007
I really believe this guy is headed for greatness. This CD is not quite there in the sense that I don't hear a musical thumbprint (and I am not talking about a personal style) but that is getting very picky. I listen to it all the time. Bravo Vieux!
