Lovely collection, don't overlook this... February 24, 2002 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
If you like Hawaiian music, give this a listen. While titled "Songs of the Hawaiian Cowboy", that really isn't the major impression made by this fine collection. It is just good, mellow island singing and slack key guitar playing. There is a tiny bit of chant, a small slice of story-telling, an excellent booklet. I lived on the Big Island from 1978 to early '83, and this album sends me right back there. I can listen to it frequently and not tire of it. Don't worry that you don't know what the words mean. Good music transcends literal understanding. This is good music. I suspect this hasn't sold many copies, and that is a shame. The Warner label's western music division, led by Michael Martin Murphy, put this out, and I'm grateful to them.
