Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
This collection of poet Robert Burns' lyrics, some time-honored songs, others especially set to music by Alton Rinker, is most sympathetically sung by Jo Stafford, accompanied by Paul Weston and His Orchestra. These recordings have never been issued on CD and have not been made available since the LP's original release in 1956. This album is a singularly touching evocation of the Scottish Highlands, and the tracks reflect Stafford's long interest in the folk songs of America and other lands, an interest that resulted in the annual Jo Stafford Prize in American Folklore.

5 out of 5 stars excellent   January 30, 2008

This is truly a "breathtaking" performance as the previous reviewer so aptly put it. These are are songs penned by the great poet Robert Burns with melodies composed by A. Rinker. My favorites are "Flow Gently Sweet Afton and "Annie Laurie with the original melody and the lyrics by Burns and "My Love is like a Red Red Rose" with a new Melody by A. Brinker and Lyrics by Burns. Definitely Worth buying and listening again and again

Joe was an incredible and versatile talent. This is certainly one of her best "theme" albums. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The beauty of Jo Stafford   June 27, 2005

Jo Stafford's incredible voice is the main focus of this beautiful CD of traditional Scottish songs. Mrs. Stafford is primarily accompanied by strings, but on a number of songs a single harp or oboe compliment the arrangements. Though in my book, Mrs. Stafford is one of the all time greatest vocalist, I am not a huge fan of her big band numbers. Fortunately, on this CD she doesn't have to fight to be heard. Her voice is so clear, so haunting, and just so perfect it is almost beyond belief. If you think you have herd the song "Auld Lang Syne" once to many times, wait until you hear Mrs. Stafford sing it. That one song is worth the price of the CD alone. In a day and age when non and over-singers are praised, Jo easily stands above them all.
