| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Set in the nineties in Rio de Janiero, the film Elite Squad follows two old friends in the military police as they try to hold onto their ideals and take a stand against the wave of corruption in the city's underworld of guns, drugs and organized crime. Pedro Bromfman's score captures everything from the contemporary late night world of discotheques to the timeless Brazilian rhythms that course through the entire culture. "Tropa de Elite" is just one example; it sounds local to the action as it opens, then steps back and becomes universally cinematic. Interspersed are selections which further paint the cityscape, as the incessant propulsion of funk gyrates around soulful vocals. Synthesizers and wah-wah pedals commingle with native percussion instruments for a heady mix that feels as big as the city in which the story takes place, as mysterious and dangerous as its nights. --David Greenberger
Product Description Winner of the top prize at the Berlin Film Festival this year, ELITE SQUAD captures the grit of Rio De Janiero, Brazil, focusing on the drugs, guns, corrupt police, and those that strive to save the city. The film, set in 1997, depicts the story of Captain Nascimento, a BOPE (Batalhao de Operacoes Policiais Especiais, the Special Police Operations Battalion) captain, who, with the imminent birth of his first child, is determined to leave the battalion and find a safer position for the sake of his family. First, however, he must find a suitable replacement for him. At the same time, the movie focuses on two childhood friends, Matias and Neto, who become cadets in the military police but become dismayed at the corruption surrounding them. Eventually, both Nascimento and the cadets' paths intersect; the captain hopes that one of the two may become the substitute he is eager to find, as both decide to join the BOPE.
The music of Elite Squad is packed full with Brazilian samba, soul, funk, and rock that further the energy and in-depth look that the film takes.
