Amazon.com Eileen Ivers is one of the guest musicians on this, the solo album from the tin whistle virtuoso of the all-female Irish American folk band Cherish the Ladies. Like Ivers, Madden is a Senior All-Ireland champion on her instrument and has modernized traditional tunes by adding synthesizers (courtesy of producer and new-age star Brian Keane) and electric bass. On this all-instrumental album, Madden doesn't pursue Ivers' improvisational flights but rather an atmospheric lushness of sound. At times, the recording threatens to lapse into mood music, but the sturdiness of the traditional tunes and the piercing purity of Madden's tone prevent that. Instead the pop touches merely provide an inviting setting for the lyrical whistle lines. --Geoffrey Himes

Simply Fantastic August 23, 2008 This is music to listen to in the evening by a fire with a wee dram at your side. It is a part of a great family of music that stems from the wonderful Cherish The Ladies and will not disappoint. Joanie Madden is quite simply a master and you will enjoy. You might also check out her great band Cherish The Ladies and some of her band members such as Cathie Ryan, whose voice matches Joanie's whistle.
An absolute treasure March 17, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Joanie Madden's "Song of the Irish Whistle" is one of my very favorite cds of all time. Very much like the Irish themselves, the music is sometimes mournful, sometimes joyful, sometimes thoughtful and sometimes prayerful. Madden's playing is a treasure to listen to and absolutely beautiful. If I'm not mistaken, an Irish tin whistle is a very small and inexpensive musical instrument, but the sounds that Joanie Madden creates on this cd are pure gold. Anyone who loves Irish music of any stripe will be enthralled with this recording; the tunes it contains, in the hands of a master musician like Madden, are just gorgeous! I'm fairly convinced that it would not be possible to dislike this fine compact disc. It nobly evokes images of a grand and peaceful place, the Ireland of our dreams. Highly recommended to anyone who appreciates splendid music making!

This really is exquisite. Each tune is beautifully played and there is enough variety in the CD to keep it interesting and to satisfy virtually any listener.
Keep rediscovering this CD June 4, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It should be obvious from all the other 5 star reviews that this CD is something special. I have owned this recording for years, but I am posting today because I find it to be one of those albums that haunts you. Every so often, out of the blue, I think of one of the tracks and have to drag it out again.
A world class artist at the top of her form, masterfully recorded. How can you go wrong?
great May 17, 2007 this is the music that I used at my pre-wedding ceremony and it is wonderful the mood it sets is unmatched. Great music a must have for any Irish music lovers.
