Accompanied by a resplendently rhythmic score and including an intriguing blend of classical, world, and contemporary western music, Abba Pater is Pope John Paul II's uplifting message to the faithful everywhere. Released in timely celebration of Holy Week and Easter, and in anticipation of the millennial Great Jubilee pilgrimage, this sacred inner expedition of sound explores universal themes of spirituality such as praise, forgiveness, and brotherly love. Abba Pater is the first musical CD ever to feature the most famous man in the world, whose dramatic and moving words delivered on these tracks are culled from archival recordings from the first 20 years of his papacy. In five beautifully expressed languages, the Pope sings, chants, and prays for the healing of humankind, all of which is perhaps best summed up by the words in Psalm 26: "I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living." --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Angelic music Prophetic Words   May 30, 2008
This work really puts the Gospel to life. I've read many of these passages before, and with the music behind it the Word totally spoke to my heart. We need more of this especially with JP2's voice. So soothing, loving and totally lifts me up to the Father in Heaven.

3 out of 5 stars Great CD but could've been better.   January 21, 2008
Chantings and Music of this CD with Pope John Paul II's own voice is amazing. However, they could've made it better by making the Pope chant some more. Overall, it's an average album and buyer will not be too disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A Message of Peace and Love Through a Special Man   August 7, 2005

While many would baulk at trying a hand in fields alien to them, Pope John Paul II was not one of them. He definitely also walked the talk which is probably why he has left behind countless numbers of admirers. His maxim "Do not be afraid" is something that sticks with me after his death in the context that he meant to not be afraid to do the right thing.

Unafraid, the great man has gone and made a cd with prayers and exhortations to do good that I found very soothing and gave me a very peaceful feeling after listening to it. It's definitely an album to be experienced rather than just listened to in the usual sense to of the word.

I notice Sony has decided to classify this as Classical given the Sony Classical label attached to this cd but I suppose the content defies rigid classification. For those who loved the man, this is a good rememberance to keep; for others, this is also a good listening experience with solidly-produced sound as well.

4 out of 5 stars Deeply Moving   April 11, 2005

I purchased this CD several years ago, listened to it once or twice, and then put it away, quite unimpressed. It seemed like a hamhanded attempt to cash in on the New Age music phenomonen.

Whether I have changed in the last few years, or whether the demise of Pope John Paul II made me listen more closely, I don't immediately know. I do know, however, that this is an excellent CD; comforting, inspiring, and far from a New-Age ripoff.

The producers and composers have assembled a fascinating sample of John Paul II's prayers, statements from homilies, etc., and have grafted these atop an eclectic orchestration, weaving in Latin chants, Polish prayers, and African rhythms in a surprisingly effective way.

Of notable impact are the Pater Noster in the song Abba Pater (sung first by John Paul II and then by a male choir), the Inno di Pentecoste segment of Vieni, Santo Spirito, the distorted & strangely clipped Polish Pater Noster in Padre Della Luce, and perhaps most moving, the Marian antiphon interspersed with Latin verse in Madre Di Tutte Le Genti.

John Paul II's voice is heard from 1980 through 1998. At times it is a bit jarring to hear how his voice changed from strong and clear to slurred and aged. But through it all, it is affecting, regardless of the language he speaks in.

A final note - the images contained in the CD jacket and liner notes are tasteful and impressive as well. Overall "Abba Pater" is a wonderful work of art that is particularly poignant today.

As a Pole, I've never experienced such a soul gathering as we've had throughout the last week. Commercial radio stations speak through our Holy Father's voice - Appa Pater. "All yours" the Pope used to say. Now he gives us the chance to once again listen to him, and him only... I never thought I would listen to this cd, but now I do, over and over again.
