Album Description Since his death at the age of 52 in 1997, the reputation and popularity of townes van zandt have grown greater by the day. He was recently, for instance, the subject of a major feature in 'mojo magazine'. Townes left behind a musical legacy of some of the most beautifully-crafted songs ever written and a legion of grateful admirers. The solo tracks in this comprehensive 2cd collection cover van zandt's most creative period, when he was recording for the poppy and tomato labels between 1968 and 1978 and highlight the man's songwriting genius. Most of his original output was recorded during this decade and appeared on his first eight albums. All of his finest songs and performances are included here, including 'pancho and lefty', 'tecumseh valley', 'for the sake of the song' and 'if i needed you'.

If you like Townes this is the essential CDs to own. He was/is one of the greatest hardly known singer/songwriters of our time.

What more can I say? This is an excellent collection of a music legend's early works. If you are at all interested in the blend of folk, blues, and country that is Townes van Zandt, you can't go wrong buying this one.

Legend, good title for this disc. For the price you get 46 songs of well-produced tunes. I'm more of a blues/rock listener, but was looking for something different and I found it. Van Zandt is a masterful troubadour. When I can feel the pain of heartache and the beauty of love in words and song, well isn't that what good music is all about. He is hard to compare to anyone, but I hear a mellow Steve Earle and some Dylan. I hear whiskey-soaked storys throughout Legend, any real man can relate to these songs.Van Zandt's jammin' buddy,Guy Clark said,"A self-destructive, depressive, reclusive alcholic is not, perhaps, built to last. And that, according to Legend was Townes Van Zandt. If you like music that epitomizes life, Get This.
