FINALLY-THE MANY TALENTS OF ANNE MURRAY ! February 4, 2006 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
This is the finest Anne Murray collection ever, especially for new fans. While this collection contains her many huge hits which are now classics ("Snowbird", "You Needed Me", "Could I Have this Dance"), her famous remakes ("Daydream Believer", "You've got a Friend"), it also includes some lesser-known, yet equally impressive, gems. Case and point : "Blue Finger Lou" showcases Anne's great vocal range with an up-tempo, toe-tapping, Vegas-style slick rendition. Her sweet, innocent side is in full view on the early cut "Destiny". She rocks out on "Just One Look" a gritty take on the old classic and her voice amazes-it blows away any preconceived stereotype you might have about Anne's music. She is pure pop with "Walk Right Back"-a much superior version than the original if you ask me. There are some Country cuts ("He Thinks I Still Care") and the surprisingly delicious Euro-technopop "Without You" with electronic drums and a very catchy beat-again not your stereotype of Anne's music. The collection closes with Anne as the ultimate Crooner with her take on such ditties as "Secret Love" and "Cry Me a River". The woman is amazing-she can sing in any style, and still come off as being truly genuine. It is a crime that Anne is not a bigger star than she is. Radio is missing out !
Nice mix of covers and originals September 27, 2003 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
This British compilation contains some of Anne's American country hits together with some covers of songs made famous by others. Anne only had a few (mostly minor) hits in Britain - Snowbird, Destiny, You needed me and Daydream believer (a cover of a Monkees hit)- and they are all here. Some of her other country hits are here, including He thinks I still care (a cover of the George Jones classic She thinks I still care), I just fall in love again, Could I have this dance and Now and forever. Casual British buyers at whom this compilation is aimed probably don't know these songs unless they already have another Anne Murray compilation, in which case they will be paying for several tracks that they already have. Most but not of the other songs will be familiar to Brits via other versions. These include You've got a friend (James Taylor), Killing me softly (Roberta Flack), Just one look (Hollies - originally an American hit for Doris Troy), Walk right back (Everly brothers), Secret love (a UK hit for Doris Day in the fifties and Kathy Kirby in the sixties), You belong to me (Jo Stafford) and Wayward wind (Frank Ifield - originally an American hit for Gogi Grant). In its way, this is a fine collection that makes a great introduction to Anne's music for the uninitiated. Personally, I would find an all-covers album more interesting than this mix of covers and originals, but this compilation was not designed for committed fans like me. Every song here can be found elsewhere, though you'd have to buy a lot of Anne's music to get them all any other way. If you haven't got any of Anne's music and are not familiar with her American hits but enjoy covers, you may find this more appealing than a Best of collection.
