Amazon.com essential recording Considered the breakthrough album that delivered a more palatable version of industrial music to the commercial audience, Pretty Hate Machine left its dingy mark on pop culture. The abrasive "sonarchy" of the album was first churned by despondent club-goers who roiled with the rhythms and aligned with the angst-ridden convictions. Since its release, the album's tempered deviations came to signify an aesthetic reverie for machine-driven martyrdom. Permeated by hissing engines and dissonant strains, the tracks cascade outside channels of modern complacency. Hits like "Head Like a Hole" and "Down in It" are recognized by the acidic beats, piercing riffs, and lyrical hostilities which snare the listener with disparaging rhapsody. Not for the light-headed, Pretty Hate Machine afflicts the inner sanctum and strikes a nerve. --Lucas Hilbert

Pretty Awesome Machine! June 15, 2010 Sound Wave Industrial rock is one of the most unique genres in all of music. The use of so many unexplored sounds to form a song is truly an art form and Trent Reznor and the Nine Inch Nails show listeners exactly how these sounds can be crafted into popular music. The many different styles of songs on this album show how good Nine Inch Nails are at capturing an emotion, usually a strong one, and putting it into a song that seems to really hit the listener with a fair amount of force. Excellent album!
Perfect Condition May 13, 2010 Lynn M. Carlson (Austin,TX) The CD was received quickly and in perfect condition. Can't ask for better than that!
Pounding Rhythms and Angst Ridden Lyrics April 20, 2010 Diane Mcgough (Lake Oswego, OR) Singer Trent Reznor (who pretty much is Nine Inch Nails writing the majority of music and lyrics on the album) made a great album with Pretty Hate Machine. He brought this particular form of harsh industrial dance music into the mainstream. Singles "Head Like A Hole" and "Terrible Lie" became immediate underground classics, still played on the dance floors of clubs year after year. I still see strippers dancing to it in the local strip clubs or should I say "gentlemen's clubs".
Pretty Hate Machine is filled with unforgettable synthesizer hooks, pounding rhythms and angst ridden lyrics song after song. Most lyrics are about relationships or love gone wrong, but he writes in the abstract aloof way which does make it more interesting. Trent Reznor is an extremely talented artist.
Just freakin' awesome April 5, 2010 Crhistopher Cantor (Irvine) NIN is a killer band, well Reznor is a stud anyway. Bottom line, this is maybe the most underappreciated, underrated album of the 90's. It should be mentioned every time The Beastie's "Pauls Botique" is mentioned as a great underappreciated/underrated album (because I think it is too).
From beginning to end, this album will blow you away. You'll finish listening to it and think to yourself - "This is NIN? Really?" Yep - really. Love this album - I simply love it. If I could marry it, I would. I love it that much.
A must have April 2, 2010 Michael Roth (New City, New York, US) I really love almost everything Trent Reznor has released, but I definitely think this is his best album. When I heard this album for the first time, I had never heard industrial music before and it was really a revelation for me. It opened up a whole new musical world to me. I remember my brother put in the tape once and I was instantly sold. At the time I didn't even know Industrial music existed. I guess this was my first industrial album because it was released around when I was fully head on into music, more at that point than any time previously in my life. Alternative/Industrial music is still my favorite type of music since first listening to PHM. Before that I was into mainly Metallica and such. Anyway, there isn't a second on this album that I don't like, and its still my favorite album to date. I listen to several different industrial bands, but none of the other albums give me the feeling I get when listening to Pretty Hate Machine. From first listening to the album I completely fused with it. It influenced me on so many levels. If you like industrial music and haven't gotten it I definitely think you should.
