Audible Ecstasy March 31, 2008 To go on and explain why you should buy this album or why you'd enjoy it would be folly so, I simply ask you to think of some of the most immensely and audibly pleasing music you've heard throughout your life; for this is exactly what Private Music sounds like. So provoking in its calmness, something of a dichotomy to listen to. It makes want to sing. It makes want to pretend you're playing the synthesizers along with our good friend Vangelis, but these songs render you serene and motionless. "Italian Song" begins with the chiming of Vangelis at his keyboards and Jon at puling your heart strings with such warm vocals as only he can deliver. Though this song is bit too brief for my taste (it doesn't even reach the 3 minute mark), it certainly prepares you well for the gradual build of emotion and passion to be found later on the album. One becomes truly appreciative of it with further listening and will soon look past its short running time. It's a perfect introduction that leaves you longing for more; and much more is to come! "And when the Night Comes" builds upon the relaxing and warm environment that's been set up by "Italian Song". Much more extensive the previous song, we come upon a defining moment in the album. So few songs have ever been able to capture such purity and almost with an effortless manner. At least, that's what sounds like to me. I clearly remember listening to this track for the first time and feeling that this is what music should hope to sound like. Truly amazing. The next song, "Deborah", is a very romantic poem that has a very hypnotic vocal pattern. This is the pinnacle of everything Jon & Vangelis represents. This song is so quintessential, I'm curious as to why it never became a single for the album. None the matter. It is here for you to enjoy, and you will. Now here, we come upon my favorite song off this album. "Sailing" is so easy to fall in love with. This is a very inviting song that, again, is ruled by a hypnotic vocal performance. Vangelis truly takes hold of the atmosphere and uses his talent to great affect.
As I'm sure you've noticed, I've skipped my commentary on "Poloniase". Indeed, and I did this for "Poloniase" and the final track "Horizon" sound as if they belong together. They could almost be like one of Yes's typical song suites found on most of their albums. Though these two songs to not appear next to each other on the album, they are so reminiscent of one another, I decoded to praise them as such. Once more, it is easy to be overcome with excitement and awe, but you'll be too entranced to do anything else but sit quietly and wait for them to end, and then be mad because they ended.
Buy for Italian Song December 25, 2006 If the entire album was as good as the Italian song, it would be a 5 plus star rating. That song is brilliant. The rest of the album is very lackluster in comparison. If you are looking for a great Jon and Vangelis album, Page of Life would be my choice. If you have never heard Italian song...download it or buy this disk...it is that good.
Complementing Mr. Kaminsky's review June 14, 2006 My Profile: 42 yo (2006) sales engineer.
Please refer to Mr. Kamisnky's beautiful and accurate review of this wonderful album.
As and admirer of Vangelis extense and diverse work, I followed with curiosity his partnering with Yes vocalist Jon Anderson and was not at all impressed with their previous work until Private Collection. In here we are faced with heavenly music (on the vinyl record it was side A) which reveals inspired lyrisms and romance (Deborahs song), yet the true masterpice lies in Horizons (Side B), here we have a monumental masterpice where Vangelis shows us what he is able of and takes us through various stages (..like a shakesperian play..)taking us to heights we only envisioned in Bladerunner... in conclusion, for all of you who were not convinced with Jon & Vangelis this is the work you need to hear
Private Collection ~ Jon & Vangelis October 17, 2005 Private Collection~ Jon & Vangelis is as great as ever and have amazing tracks such as the Italian Song. The Italian Song is not sung in Italian as I had orginally thought but he sings words that sounds like Italian and this is a brilliant stroke on behalf of Jon Anderson. Being their third album and this is without a doubt their most ambitious and it is produced with layers upon layers of early 80's synth sounds (Roland, Synclavier and Fairlight come to mind). Other tracks that are quite splendid are Deborah, He is sailing and as I have said the main star being the short yet stupendous track "Italian Song".
