Amazon.com With its heavy-duty distortion, weighty rhythms, and cynical lyrics, Tool is a heavy metal band for the '90s. Rather like Metallica circa ...And Justice for All, the sound is focused heavily on texture, with vocals and guitars layered one atop the other, and heart-pounding drums underlying everything. There's not a whole lot of variety on Tool's second full-length album--most of the songs start off fairly low-key, kicking into high gear for the chorus, and repeat--but Maynard James Keenan's distinctive voice, the prog-rock stylings over a heavy metal base, and a supremely unhealthy dose of vitriol make this the perfect album to bang your head to. --Genevieve Williams

Perfect Purchase August 20, 2010 Christy Smith (CLEVELAND, TEXAS, US) Received item much faster than we expected and couldn't be happier with it! Personally, I think Tool is one of the best bands ever, so all that really concerned me with this purchase is that the cd would be free of scratches and play as loud as humanly possible...which it does, so yeah...I'm thrilled with this purchase.

This is the best album ever made. I know there are a lot of naysayers out there that hate Tool just becuase so many people like it. It's okay if you don't "get" Tool. You don't have to hate it just because you don't understand it. I personally have learned a lot from Tool, and from the philosophy they reference. I don't think Maynard really means to be taken so seriously as a lot of people try to. He's got a good sense of humor, and many of his songs that offend so many people are tongue-in-cheek and simply done because it's offensive. The whole concept that Tool is trying to get across is to think for yourself, and question authority. It's not to follow them like sheep, or worship them, or worship anything for that matter. So many people waste so much energy trying to do what they are told, or what they think they should do to gain status or posessions and it's sad. Everything we are tought by institutions is meant to keep us in line, and baaa-ing like sheeple throughout our seemingly meaningless lives. You don't have to like Tool, you don't have to do anything, but we all need to think for ourselves, and we need to question the very concept of what we think authority is. We could be a lot happier if lived life for the purpose of enjoying it, and helping others enjoy it, instead of for the purpose of stuffing our pockets with dirty paper for the benefit of those who print the paper. I want more for my kids than to have them lead a life in a cage. I'll be damned if they're going to grow up with the same, bassackwards outlook on life as everyone around them. This'll give them something to listen to as they break the mold, and live a truly free and happy life.
the actually songs deserve 4.5 stars, but the filler shouldn't have been on here June 27, 2010 B. Forman (Pawtucket, RI USA) tool fans suck. they take everything i hate about prog AND pop and combine to make this uber-annoying person that i picture as a early 70's looking version of peter gabriel that shops at hot topic. imagine gabriel with that stupid reverse mohawk trying to convince you that KMFDM is actually a good band.
i really wonder if all the people that gave this 5 stars actually listen to all of those annoying tracks that aren't songs every single time. i get it, but as they're completely seperate entities from the actual songs themselves they were made to be skipped. which i do. if i didn't have to skip them this would be 5 stars.
Not Your Average Metal Album. . . June 13, 2010 A. Ricciuti Metal (or meTal as the Amazon forum likes to call it). Rock and roll pushed to the excessive extremes of volume, technicality, masculinity, and darkness. Worshipped by fans, too often dismissed by critics, and attacked by polititions of both major American parties. It makes a great soundtrack to our frustration and pusuit of power in our lives. Great stuff, but with a great flaw: heavy handedness. Good thing we have Tool.
Tool has the unique ability to make refreshingly un-pretentious, soulful heavy metal that clearly comes from the bottom of a very dark heart.
Combining the epic majesty of Pink Floyd and the heaviness of prime time Black Sabbath, Tool's "AEnima" is possibly the most strangely beautiful metal album I know of. Adam Jones's guitar can scream like a monster and sing like an angel, dripping with distortion and echo. Justin Chancellor plays both stomping basselines at the lowest part of the instrument's down-tuned range and clean, lyrical lead melodies nearer to the top. Danney Carey brings on pounding prog beats rich with intricate fills and tricky time signatures. The famous Maynard James Keenan's one-of-a-kind vox completes the formula, sorrowfully serenading one moment and bellowing with rage in the next. I think the contrasting of elements is a good stragey to making memorable music. "AEnima"'s juxtaposition of brutality against sweetness is an exhibit of that strategy executed perfectly.
Some key tracks:
"Pushit" - A lengthy progtastic mini-drama. One of the "AEnima"'s more ethereal songs.
"AEnima" - A prayer for the Apocalypse. Probably the best (and angriest) song on the album.
"Hooker with a Penis" - A big FU (literally) to moronic fans who accuse bands of selling out. Makes a great headbanger.
"Message to Harry Manback" - A drunk Italian guy leaving a threatening message on an answering machine with some melancholy piano music playing the background. One of several short segues between songs.
Aenima, tool, 1996 CD. April 27, 2010 Dr. Feelgood (USA) Tool's music probably can be described as: Progressive Alternative Metal, perhaps. One thing, that's for sure, is that they are all very proficient musicians, more interested in performing, than writing songs. Even though, they manage to combine the two forms, on this record, and come up with some listenable material, which still can be somewhat esoteric at times.
