Country music reclaimed its traditional soul with the chart-topping triumph of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack. This concert sequel, recorded (and filmed) at Nashville's venerable Ryman Auditorium, reunites Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss and Union Station, and other O Brother standouts. With little duplication, the selection extends the movie's revival of acoustic spirituals and Appalachian balladry, though the performances and pacing of the concert aren't quite as consistently compelling as the studio soundtrack. Among the highlights are a pair of originals by Welch and David Rawlings, the bluesy "Dear Someone" and the Everlyesque "I Want to Sing That Rock and Roll." Where O Brother interspersed archival recordings among the contemporary artistry, the concert finds Nashville gospel's Fairfield Four harmonizing on the chain-gang chant of "Po' Lazarus," while the late John Hartford (in one of his final performances) renews the deadpan whimsy of "Big Rock Candy Mountain." --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars used, but like new!   January 24, 2008

was very happy with it. Bought it used, but it played like brand new.

5 out of 5 stars Want to hear some REAL MUSIC ??? You will find it here . . .   November 25, 2007
Stumbled upon a track by the Fairfield Four, searched for more by them, found this treasure instead . . .

With an amazing array of TALENT who pour ALL of it into their performances, you get an amazing array of styles and musical genres that left ME wishing I could have been there to hear it in person !

Now I have the DVD of the concert, the audio disk of the same, and still have yet to see the movie . . . and am enjoying it all very much !

If you appreciate melody, harmony, great lyrical phrasing, and songs with a simple message behind them, don't miss out . . . get your ears wrapped around this music !

Highly recommended !

4 out of 5 stars A bit different   October 1, 2007

If you liked the first and second addition, you'll most likely enjoy this one too. Most artists here are well published, but some are real finds. I like 'pitiful' music and if you do, there is a bit here for you. Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars Too country for country?   August 28, 2007
For many years, when I thought of country music, I thought only of the drawling pop singers on the hot country stations whose slickly produced songs are dripping with calculated sentimentality and lacking in honest emotion. Exposure to artists like Hank Williams and Johnny Cash have convinced me that good country music can be found if one knows where to look, and this CD confirms that belief. These Appalachian ballads and bluegrass numbers by a collection of old-timers and contemporary artists who are trying to keep the faith provide a real dose of Americana and an antidote to superficial country pretenders.

4 out of 5 stars Finale Not Included   August 23, 2007
This is most, but not all, of the music from the DVD. It is missing Down To The River To Pray and the finale, the name of which escapes me. That it is missing the finale is a big disappointment, but the rest of the performances are wonderful.
