Great release for a taste of what Lustmord has to offer. Complillation. November 24, 2008 Beautiful, deep cavernous sound sculptures, ambient for the secret underdwellings that offer so much for audio experiences. Transcend, lay back and let the audio create your atmosphere.

A Lustmord compilation of rarities April 4, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
When attempting to review a Lustmord album, one runs into the inevitable difficulty of helping the prospective buyer differentiate one CD from the next. I have the same problem with Muslimgauze and Merzbow. It's not that they keep putting out the same CDs every year. Just that they have a very personal style, are very prolific, and a lot of the tracks are very similar. That said, I'll give it a try.
Purifying Fire isn't actually new material, but a compilation of older work from a variety of sources. Track 1 and 4 originally appeared on the rare "Strange Attractor/Black Star" 12". Tracks 2, 3, 5, and 6 were released on ambient compilation CDs - DeepNet, Seedmouth, Vhutemas Archetypi, and Dry Lungs, respectively. However, as I understand it, the Dry Lungs compilation never got released.
The music all bares Williams' sonic signature of darkness and mystery. Strange Attractor and Black Star are the highlights. Deep Calls to Deep and Deep Calls to Dub are a bit too similar for me to really prefer one over the other. They seem to be remixes of the same source material, but I could be wrong.
Since this isn't a typical album, it doesn't have the uniformity of sound that you get on something like Heresy. But, that means there's a lot more variety than one usually expects. If you're a fan, pick this up. Those new to Lustmord might do better to try Heresy first. Overall, this is a solid 4.5 stars.
