Surrender to this CD by The Boss January 9, 2009 I love what they did for this CD. The alternate versions are worth the price alone. This has been one of my favorite albums for a long time. I love every song on it.
Remastered??? January 1, 2009 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Love most of the songs on this "grab bag" CD...some interesting bonus tracks from the vaults...but don't tell me the tracks were "remastered"! Sounds like the music was recorded in a shoe box; dull, one dimensional, muffled.
I'd give this another star if not for the horrible sound quality.
IMO, many of the songs on this LP deserved more attention and praise at the time. I was just starting to hit the clubs in 1971 and I remember "Surrender" being a crowd favorite. Many consider it a seminal disco record ("pre-disco" disco)... it should have been stretched to 4:30 minimum play time!
"Reach Out" was a decent follow-on to "Ain't No Mountain.." -- same lush arrangements, very dramatic build up...but just not as tight as its predecessor. Sort of builds to a "so what?" point...still, it's a classic IMO.
I Surrendered My Love December 23, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I picked up a copy of the re-mastered 'Surrender' cd last week and it managed to remind me why I'm a Diana Ross fan. First and foremost is discovery. Everytime I listen to Ms. Ross, I tend to hear something that I missed in previous listens.
And this is no exception - a little history:
Whenever I talk about my favorite Diana Ross songs, at the top of the list is "Reach Out, I'll Be There," and it was this album that first introduced this bold re-make of Ashford and Simpson's classic (another version appeared later on 'Ross'). Initially I thought the song was added to capitalize on 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough's' momentum that transformed Diana's first solo project into a sizable hit. In America, Diana's follow up, 'Everything is Everything' quickly disappeared, which put 'Surrender' into the spotlight. 'Remember Me' was a moderate hit but at least it did better than any single from 'Everything is Everything' (I'm Still Waiting had little play in the U.S. and Doo-Be....didn't even see the light of day). 'Surrender' on the other hand, is the predicesor to the Honeycones, 'Innocent Till Proven Guilty' and is, in fact a perfect companion to it. There is a certain urgency, desperation, to the song that is seldom heard elsewhere in Diana's music library. I didn't know what it was but the remastered cd put it into perspective...'it had soul" - and urgency. Which is the second reason I love her music and why I'm such a big fan of hers...Diana brings different aspects of her personality into her songs. Listenning to this cd is like rediscovering fire! I never gave the album much respect because, for me, it came on the heals of 'Everything is Everything' which cooled down Diana's career. 'Surrender' had a few gems (the aforementioned singles and 'I Can't Give Back The Love") which deserved a bigger audience than it initially had. 'Surrender' had catchy hooks, strong vocals and powerful arrangements that, upon listenning to this stunning re-release, transcend time, as proven by the rousing reception 'Reach Out, I'll Be There' received when it was revived in concert several decades later. The bonus cuts only confirms my belief that the Motown machine knew what they were doing when it came to selecting the right version for inclusion in the final album release. Still, its fun and interesting to see these songs being reincarnated and molded. The inflections, delivery and different instrumentations is worth the investment. Valerie Simpson and David Nathan offers commentary that sheds new light on these old favorites. The rediscovery of this semi-forgotten album has forced me to rexamine its place in my personal album favorites of Diana Ross. There's a lot of good things about this album that's been brought to the surface! Thanks to Hip-O Select, Andy Skurow, David Nathan and all the other wonderful people behind Diana's remasters. But here's a thought to your next cd re-issue: Why not add some visuals? I'm sure there are a lot of performances of Diana performing these songs that can be included. Now that would be a Special Edition!
Underrated and Underappreciated Masterpiece December 19, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This cd is another amazing Diana Ross reissue from Hip-O Select with perfect digital remastering for excellent sound quality and tons of superb bonus tracks. The album itself SURRENDER was Diana Ross's third solo release and went under the radar not selling very well. This is sad and confusing for it is one of the best works from her career.
Having AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH as Diana's first solo single was a mixed blessing. It was a huge hit which was great but it also established her as the slightly over the top diva she would become and took the focus off of how vocally gifted she is. SURRENDER is a true artist's album with quality vocals and very strong interpretive readings. Two of my all time favorite Diana songs are here - SURRENDER and REMEMBER ME. They are both more in the r@b vein than pop as is most of this cd. There is really only one uptempo pop fun song - I'M A WINNER. It is great but it is all the other songs with their r@b stance and excellent vocals that make them standouts from Diana's career. I don't understand why SURRENDER did not succeed as a hit single. It has a heavy beat and pounding vocals. All the songs here are timeless and not dated at all. Listen closely to the vocal expertise on I CAN'T GIVE BACK THE LOVE I FEEL FOR YOU, AND IF YOU SEE HIM, DID YOU READ THE MORNING PAPER and I'LL SETTLE FOR YOU. There isn't a miss here but these are the standouts. Diana is vocally at her prime. For some reason it wasn't what the public wanted though.
Diana Ross has had many chapters to her lengthy career and during most she has been a strong physical presence which has been amazing but often made her vocals be something taken for granted. The bonus tracks here are also great. There are two different versions of REMEMBER ME and they are pitch perfect and very different takes. There is also an alternate take on AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH which is a little less flashy and excellent.
This cd shows why Diana has been around so long. It is a set of songs performed with emotion, range and exsquisite versatility. Most important, it is an r@b Diana Ross and she shines. This is a must have for any Diana fan or fans of quality music from legendary artists.
"SURRENDER" - One Of Diana's Definning Momemts December 17, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This was a fine project for our "Diva" Diana. She mastered all the songs. I actually got her to autograph a "early" release copy of this album at her then home in Beverly Hills, California. I shyly told her that I loved the "Can't Give Back The Love" song and that I felt that it would be a smash single. She was gracious and appreciated my comments while being very, very pregnant with her first child (Rhonda). Those of you that don't have this CD are missing out on songs with unmatched "SUPREME" vocals along with her signature phrasing and diction. "DID YOU READ THE MORNING PAPER" and "A SIMPLE THING LIKE CRY" are standout cuts. There has always been and will forever be only one.....DIANA ROSS!
