Album Description 2008 release, a reissue of the album which introduced the wonderful talent of Laura Nyro to the world! More Than A New Discovery (AKA The First Songs) is informed by the styles of Laura's youth. She had just turned 19 when she recorded the album in early 1966, and the songs retain a youthful exuberance and glisten with beautiful Pop melodies and then-fashionable, sturdy '60s NY arrangements. Laura's lyrics are as poetically-charged and mature as at her peak, from the wise 'And When I Die' to the observational approach of 'Buy and Sell'. Musically, the album was obviously tailored to fit the prevailing landscape of '60s female Pop singers and it often has the same soulful atmosphere of Dusty Springfield and Evie Sands or the brash, bravura Pop of Barbra Streisand, who was to take 'Stoney End' to the charts three years later. Rev-Ola.

Prayer Answered September 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
In the seventies, when I had a cheap stereo, the Columbia issue of these songs ("The First Songs") was adequate. However, when I obtained a better stereo system the songs sounded tinny - even after I purchased a new copy of the album. About 10 yeras ago I found a mint, mono copy of "More Than A New Discovery" on Verve and was astounded by how much better it sounded.
Alas, my turntable hasn't worked for the past several years. I had hoped that Columbia would remaster "The First Songs" the same way that they did for "Eli & The First Confession," "New York Tendaberry" and "Gonna Take A Miracle," but they disappointed me in that regard.
If, like me, you had held-off purchasing "The First Songs" due to the poor production values on it, then you need wait no longer. This release captures the full warmth of the original Verve release on vinyl. If you're unaware of the sonic distinction between the two releases, then you're in for a wonderful surprise.
Originally I was disappointed that it is in stereo, rather than mono, but it does define the separation of the instruments very well.
I highy recommend this release for anyone who doesn't have either collection, as well as for any die-hard fan who wants to upgrade their collection. I also wish to thank Rock Ola for answering my prayer in this regard.
I thought this a good offering... August 25, 2008 >>>>All the other Laura Nyro albums that have been remastered and reissued have contained bonus tracks, --- Not so-for at least the one other 'CBS classical period' LN: 'Christmas and the beads of sweat'-her 'last'before she went into hiding for a few years I never understood why SONY left this one off the deluxe reissue roster back in 2003 So it was reissued March 2008-and I fear that because it is from 'SMBG Special Markets' that it will be just the 1993 disc with a new catalog number.
Timeless & beautiful songs from one of the greats August 16, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I felt compelled to write a review to supply 5 stars to balance out all the misleading 2-star ratings. I find all the criticisms of this reissue completely bogus. Bonus tracks? There aren't any, so get over it. It's obvious from the song list there are none, so why berate the album for lacking something you knew it lacked to begin with? (Besides, most unreleased stuff is usually second-rate anyway -- that's why it was never released in the first place. If you want to hear unreleased demos from these sessions buy Laura Nyro - Lyrics and Reminiscences -- it contains a CD with early versions of "And When I Die" and "Lazy Susan" -- neither of which are that good and are vastly inferior to the released versions.) Another complaint dealt with the album's running order. If that was indeed an issue, it has been remedied.
This album should be rated on what it is and what it offers. And what it is is sublime -- some of the most timeless and gorgeous pieces of pure pop/soul craft you'll ever hear. The majority of the songs on this album have become part of the canon; they're standards. How many other debut albums written by teen-aged songwriters can you name that have achieved this? It also restores the original title of the album. And the original album art is also restored, and it is supplemented with an informative essay that puts the album in the context of Nyro's career. And most importantly, this reissue lovingly restores the sound of "More Than a New Discovery" so that the songs come alive as they did on the original vinyl, with all its depth and clarity but with none of the distortion that marred "First Songs." For that alone, this reissue deserves 5 stars.
I have been waiting years for this album to be released in a version that does these songs proud -- and this is it. It's an essential purchase for any Laura Nyro fan, for anyone who loved any of the many cover versions of these songs, as well as for anyone who enjoys highly original popular music, which in Laura's case means (in the words of the AMG biography) "intricate, haunting works highlighting her singularly powerful vocal phrasing, evocative lyrics, and alchemical fusion of gospel, soul, folk, and jazz structures."
Buy this now, before it goes out of print.
wonderfully gifted June 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Laura Nyro was a wonderfully gifted songwriter. She possessed a winsome voice that still stands out. No one can match her singing. After all these years, I'm still blown away by "Blowin' Away." "Buy and Sell," is still intriguing. "And When I Die" was penned at the age of thirteen. Beyond the lyrics, who understands Aaron Copeland at thirteen? I am glad you are recognizing this great American talent, her work should not be obscure.
$30? Ha-ha-ha! But this is really great music by an interesting singer/songwriter May 23, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I guess I gave it one star to drive home even further the point that this reissue is pointless. I agree with the other reviewers and feel fortunate that I long ago found the CD of the Columbia reissue of this album, "The First Songs," in a used CD store and got it for about $8. Same great songs as on this overpriced lunker for 1/4 the price.
