5 out of 5 stars Haydn by Fey   December 6, 2008

Fey's Haydn discs have grown stronger with each release. One or two of the early volumes didn't really do it for me, but the last several have been wonderful, in particular Sym. 49, 52 & 58, and Sym. 69, 86 & 87, and amazing disc that belongs in everyone's library. This newest volume of Sym. 60 & 61, plus an overture in D, is equally as good, with sparkling clarity, well chosen tempos and superb execution. There is a level of excitement and of-the-moment music making that is incredibly captivating, and none too common on disc. It helps as well that the sonics are superb and not too reverberant (this is the case with all these releases). Fey gets Haydn: his brand of wit, sometimes eccentric creativity, revolutionary motivic writing and unconventional structures. This would mean nothing were he not able to convert that knowledge into a musical and emotional experience, and he does. This series is one to watch and collect. Urgently recommended.
