MOZART: WIND SERENADES K.361, K.375, K.388, and DIVERTIMENTI K.240, K.252, and K.270 by CHRISTOPHER HOGWOOD, Virtuoso Conductor, AMADEUS WINDS critically acclaimed Chamber Ensemble, and the legendary ACADEMY OF ANCIENT MUSIC!!!

RATED 5-STARS by classical music critics/enthusiasts as the BEST DIGITAL RECORDING of MOZART'S WIND SERENADES K.361, K.375, K.388 and DIVERTIMENTI K.240, K.252 and K.270!!!

The AMADEUS WINDS conducted by CHRISTOPHER HOGWOOD is regarded as
one of the WORLD'S FIRST AND NUMERO UNO CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED CLASSICAL PERIOD INSTRUMENTS CHAMBER ENSEMBLES!

The AMADEUS WINDS play MOZART'S WIND SERENADE K.361 and SERENADES K.375 superbly and it is evident that each individual is a virtuoso of original period instruments. Artfully conducted by CHRISTOPHER HOGWOOD, the AMADEUS WINDS ensemble playing is balanced, lyrically beautiful, the timbre of the older original period instruments is softer than modern classical instruments, and the subtly nuanced sound on wind instruments is clearly detailed.

CD REVIEW AND FEEDBACK
WOLFGANG MOZART'S largest, richest, and most famous WIND COMPOSITION was his incomparable seven movement SERENADE IN B FLAT, K.361 (GRAN PARTITA). Often referred to as the SERENADE FOR 13 WIND INSTRUMENTS, this is not strictly correct as it is scored for 13 instruments but generally not all are wind. In his autograph score, WOLFGANG MOZART specifies GRAN PARTITA K.361 to be played with 12 wind instruments - 4 horns, pairs of basset-horns, oboes, clarinets and bassoons with the addition of one double-bass.

Wolfgang Mozart's GRAN PARTITA K.361 is conducted by world famous maestro CHRISTOPHER HOGWOOD who expertly leads the AMADEUS WINDS with majestic ebullience and a stunning performance on period instruments. In my professional classical music opinion, this CD is a MUST HAVE CD for ALL WOLFGANG MOZART CLASSICAL MUSIC ENTHUSIASTS who love period instruments the way MOZART would have played them and expected them to be heard!

Little is known about Mozart's SERENADE IN B FLAT, K.361 (GRAN PARTITA)., thought to have been composed around 1781 in Vienna. GRAN PARTITA K.361 contains a wind octet for pairs of clarinets, horns, bassoons and oboes and cast in four movements, this score is unusually sombre for Mozart.

MOZART'S WIND SERENADE IN B FLAT, K.361 (GRAN PARTITA) has been rated for the last 250 years as one of Mozart's most exalted classical music creations that express his true genius and artistic greatness with which no other classical music can be compared because it is beyond all imitation. There is a magical spiritual moment in Peter Shaffer's play and Milos Forman's film version of AMADEUS in which Antonio Salieri, cast very much as the villain, sits unnoticed and listens to a performance of the SERENADE GRAN PARTITA K.361. SALIERI DESCRIBES THE WAY THE INSTRUMENTS ENTER, ENTWINE, FALL AWAY AND RE-EMERGE -- IT'S A MASTERLY DESCRIPTION OF HOW MUSIC WORKS, BUT ABOVE ALL, OF HOW MUSIC ENTERS OUR SOULS. MOZART'S "SERENADE" IS ONE OF HIS MOST SUBLIME CREATIONS, THE BLEND OF WIND INSTRUMENTS COMBINING TO CREATE A EUPHONY THAT CANNOT FAIL TO CREATE A SENSE OF JOY IN ITS AUDIENCE. THE FAST MOVEMENTS BUBBLE WITH VIGOR AND JOIE DE VIVRE AND THE SLOW MOVEMENTS AS SHAFFER'S SALIERI ELOQUENTLY REALIZED ACHIEVE A MAGIC THAT ONLY A TOWERING CLASSICAL MUSIC GENIUS SUCH AS MOZART COULD HAVE ACHIEVED.

This 2-CD set's second most famous composition is MOZART'S SERENADE IN C MINOR K.388(NACHT MUSIQUE) was written for eight instruments - 2 Oboes, 2 Clarinets, 2 Bassoons, and 2 Horns.

SERENADE IN C MINOR K.388(NACHT MUSIQUE)is Mozart's most radical wind serenade with its stormy explosive opening Allegro, learned canonic Minuet, and contrapuntal complexity that was totally out of keeping with the 18th Century's expectations for the serenade genre. Mozart was always experimenting with the creation of new classical music structures which explains SERENADE K.388 NACHT MUSIQUE's atypical character.

OUR POPULAR UNDERSTANDING OF THE SERENADE AND DIVERTIMENTO IN WOLFGANG MOZART'S 18TH CENTURY MUSIC IS BASED ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY ON THE WORKS OF MOZART. MOXART'S SERENADES AND DIVERTIMENTI are not only the finest works of their kind but they also hold an important place in Mozart's overall musical output which makes them doubly significant.

The DIVERTIMENTO and its related classical music form the SERENADE enjoyed a special place in the musical life of Mozart's birthplace Salzburg, Austria. Leopold Mozart wrote many such works as did Michael Haydn, the Prince Archbishop's Second Kapellmeister. Mozart himself was commissioned to provide entertainment music for affluent Salzburg families on a regular basis and lavished great care on the composition of these works not least for the reason that so many people heard them. SERENADES AND DIVERTIMENTI were played outdoors and attracted large, popular audiences.

MOZART'S SERENADES AND DIVERTIMENTI were very popular classical works and the reflect the enormous variety of styles, instrumentation, and diverse Western European origins. In the supper scene of Mozart's opera DON GIOVANNI, a small on-stage wind ensemble plays several items popular operas of the day including non piu andrai from his own LE NOZZE DI FIGARO. this scene in the opera is particularly interesting from a musicological point of view since it provides us with a vivid example of the kind of setting for which much Mozart's serenade music was composed.

THE MAJORITY OF MOZART'S SERENADES and DIVERTIMENTI WERE COMPOSED IN SALZBURG for LOCAL PATRONS. Whether the genre was less popular in Vienna or simply that Mozart's new professional activities revolved around

Mozart's SERENADE K.388 NACHT MUSIQUE was dated July 1782 on account of a reference Mozart made in a letter to his father Leopold concerning a Nacht Musique he was working on for wind ensemble. Mozart approached the composition of every work with care, even the most ephemeral entertainment music, but none of the works composed in Salzburg for wind ensemble prepares us for the intensity, intellectual power and grave beauty of his magnificent SERENADE IN C MINOR, K.388 (NACHT MUSIK). That Mozart thought very highly of K.388 NACHT MUSIK is obvious from his later arrangement of it for string quintet. K.388 NACHT MUSIK's first movement, with its gripping unison opening, nervous syncopations and improbably beautiful second subject, is a miraculous creation, dramatic and yet structurally perfect. The recapitulation is no mere restatement, but represents a reworking and reinterpretation of the musical material. K.388 NACHT MUSIK's andante is a suave movement which shares the qualities of the serenade SECONDATE, AURETTE AMICHE in MOZART'S COSI FAN TUTTE and is a perfect foil for the dramatic first movement and provides a period of emotional respite before the Menuetto in canone. Like JOSEPH HAYDN, WOLFGANG MOZART was a contrapuntist of the first order who had the rare gift of being able to write music of extreme complexity without sacrificing its expressive qualities. K.388 NACHT MUSIK's driving canonic Menuetto with its contrasting Trio in double mirror canon is breathtaking in its mastery of strict counterpoint and yet has the seemingly effortless musicality of one of the composer's most popular dances. K.388 NACHT MUSIK's fourth movement is in the form of a theme with eight free variations. K.388 NACHT final variation in C major brings this Mozart serenade masterpiece to a bustling conclusion recapturing the true character and spirit of the Salzburg's serenades.
