Great for a true fan !! January 1, 2009 I have to agree with the cd-heaven and Richard P. Mayhew reviews. I think there is some fantastic footage in this dvd. If you grew up in the 70's as I did, Ronnie's lynyrd IS THE ONLY Lynyrd, and this is about as good as it gets from back then. Maybe the video is not the greatest and maybe the audio is not 5.1 or dts, but it is still fantastic ! It's well worth buying just for "Freebird The Movie" alone ! The tribute tour is worth watching at least once though. The menus are a little wild, but well worth putting up with for the great music & the great footage of Ronnie and co. I hope that some of the younger guys and girls that only know the later Lynyrd watch this and see what Lynyrd Skynrd is really all about !!
5 STARS (in spite of the camera work) November 17, 2008 I honestly don't get whoever edited this. Really -- you have perhaps one of the most amazing musical moments ever -- Collins, Rossington and Gaines WAILING on Freebird... and Mr Editor chooses crowd reaction shots. Plus, during some of the great leads in other song, the editor chooses close ups of Ronnie (cool once in a while) or he zooms in on whoever's playing rhythm. Talk about asleep at the AVID. Such a shame -- 3 or 4 camera shoot. Kind of wasted on cheesy editing. Can't deny the band didn't do their part though. Killer Skynyrd. Man these guys were great. I wonder if other shows were shot from this era.
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird the Movie/Tribute Tour DVD July 10, 2008 Freebird "the Movie": This is an excellent documentary and concert DVD of "pre-plane crash" Lynyrd Skynyrd at their very best. It was premeired at Atlanta's Fox Theater where this version of Skynyrd played and recorded a concert there. The documentary gives an excellent history and story of the band up until the plane crash. It contains interviews of the members of the band at the time, and by family members. The concert portion has excellent footage of Skynyrd playing before an outdoor crowd of 250,000 people in England. The "three guitar" performances by Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, and Steve Gaines are awesome. This is a piece of Rock and Roll history well worth having. Words just can't describe how good it is. The performance of "Freebird" at an outdoor venue in Oakland is awesome. The documentary ends with the band boarding their plane, being on the plane, and shows the plane taking off. It leaves us wondering "what might have been?". The Tribute concert tour is narrated by Charlie Daniels. Ronnie Van Zant's daddy "Lacy" is the MC. The footage from this tribute tour Rocks also. It is history of the post-crash Skynyrd reforming and starting over. Johnny Van Zant (Ronnie's little brother) sings the vocals. This new version of Skynyrd has evolved into the current version of Skynyd that is still performing and touring today.
top top notch May 25, 2008 Well, if you like this band you will love this video. One of my all time favorite songs is free bird. Man I love that song. The video of it is at an actual real live outdoor concert on the fourth of July in '77. To see all those guitars blasting out the chords....it's just too much for my getting old body to take. I climbed a lot of mountains in my yout ( as the man says ) and took my cassette player along. I sat on a lot of summits ( like Mt. Hood ) and listened to Free Bird. Took the song along as well the time I flew on a Concorde. Power, that's what the song is. Power. Like I said, if you like LS then get this video. It captures the time and for the time and conditions the vid and sound quality is pretty darn good.
I wish they'd checked the fuel level prior to taking off......so many losses back then so close together. What would these boys have done if they'd had more time? We'll never know but at least we have this. Buy it. Listen to it and do some cryin like I did. and turn it up LOUD.
Good. May 20, 2008 Well, I can't say I wasn't expecting better. For such a great band, this is a really poor dvd. Tho, it's still worth it, that's why I rated with 5 stars. A must for skynyrd's fans.
aww, and the tribute tour was really boring. Only 4 songs played, and they edited freebird really poorly. didn't like it at all.
Tho, freebird the movie is really awesome. Is worth every cent.
