The Best Burton Ever November 17, 2008 Rick (Austin TX) If you are a Burton Cummings fan you must purchase this CD period. The collection is definetly the Best you will ever hear of Burton (thus far). The emotions run from high to low as you listen through the songs. This CD contains hits that will keep you listening again and again.
Canadian Rock frontman... Why this album has not been reissued again? February 19, 2008 ARMANDO R. VENEGAS (Lima, Peru) It has been specially hard for me to find this CD, 'cause for "who-knows-what-unconceivable-reason", it is likely to consider that Rhino Records (or WEA Music) has decided not to reissue it ever again. Weird decision...
Even after the breakup of the Guess Who, this guy certainly knows how to compose/sing quality Pop/Rock music! There are a lot of examples in this 'Collection': from lovely ballads like "I'm Scared" and "Timeless Love", to good rockin' tunes like "Never Had A Lady Before" and his classic "My Own Way To Rock". Being so talented with the piano, even when Rock purists could express a different opinion, I find that Burton Cummings, not reaching the peaks of popularity/record production of Elton John or Billy Joel, however his musical production is worth the price of trying to get this Collection of his best hits.
One great missing here: "Got To Find Another Way". But, we already know it: nothing is perfect in the Record industry...
A must-have for any serious Classic Rock collector!
Like this one a lot ..... May 22, 2007 Barbara Manter (Midcoast Maine) Stand Tall, I'm Scared, Charlemagne, Timeless Love - the list goes on. These are wonderful songs that no one can/could sing like BC himself. Great collection!
More Than The Best! November 9, 2003 Martin A Hogan (San Francisco, CA. (Hercules)) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
When Burton Cummmings left the "Guess Who", it was a real test for his talent. This Rhino collection proves that Cummings is a long lasting Canadian/World treasure of an artist. Most people will only recognize "Stand Tall", a huge hit from the seventies, but there is so much more to this twenty song collection. "I'm Scared" is as soulful as Cummings gets and "Never Had A Lady Before" is a romantic masterpiece. For bouncy rock 'n roll, there is the clever "Charlemagne" and "My Own Way To Rock". Never one to ignore his balladeer side, Cummings gives great performances on the essential "Timeless Love" and "I Will Play A Rhapsody". Other than the first cut, "Fine State Of Affairs" should have a been a huge single. It is one of the most finely crafted pop singles he has ever created and a testament to this fine collection.
A Nearly Faultless Collection October 17, 2002 Brett Simpson (Auckland, New Zealand) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Two thumbs up to the folks at Rhino - this album was very obviously lovingly compiled by real BC fans, and with the approval of the man himself. All seven of his solo albums are represented, perhaps unsurprisingly the focus belongs on the first three. His best known solo tunes such as "Stand Tall", "I'm Scared", "Break It To Them Gently" and "You Saved My Soul" are all here, along with a choice selection of album cuts. The only quibble about song selection I have is that his second effort, the lacklustre "My Own Way To Rock" is overrepresented. An extra track from "Woman Love", or better still one of the albums still unavailable on CD would have been better. Nevertheless with a track list containing such titles as "Is It Really Right", "Charlemagne", "I Will Play A Rhapsody", "Fine State Of Affairs", "Heart" and "Take One Away" there can hardly be much room for complaint. Of course there are many other great tracks on his albums, but if you want a solid overview of his career, or just need an introduction to it, then this will satisfy your needs ably.
